    Why should it?

You mean when you lose 3 coverage?
I would guess (assuming you know you have good Orange coverage), it's a
    faulty phone?

Try the Sim in another known good 3 phone, if it's still doing it,
there's something wrong with the account/Sim

    Just curious as to why.

On 3 on my 6210, there's an option for 3G+2G or 3G only (no 2G only
regrettably). Not sure if this is held on the SIM or the phone; if it's
the SIM, that might be your answer

Though I suspect it's on the phone

Three have to tell Orange to let your phone roam onto their network.
They forgot to do this with my (contract) phone, but a call to
customer services sorted it out. Took about two days for the
    information to propagate through.

I wonder if there are other things sometimes overlooked

I occasionally read people complaining that on the switch from O2 to
Orange 2g roaming, they lost coverage in a certain area, particularly
    at home

Yet my old WePay SIM will still roam on both Orange and O2. Have other
people still got this, and is it perhaps because I don't switch it on
much, so may have escaped SIM updates?
