Hi all,
Please may I pick your collective brains? I have an iPhone which I use for
all my calls/texts/internet etc but I cannot use it with my TomTom for the
plus services.
I have a K810i so I would like to get a PAYG sim to use it with the TomTom.
I have looked at the websites for O2/Orange/Tmobile/Vodafone/3 but I can't
find any real info on using a PAYG sim for small amounts of data. There
seems to be masses of info on calls and sms and also on mobile braodband but
nothing for what I want.
In short, which network offers the best PAYG sim for small irregular amounts
of data?

Have you looked at the ADSA SIM only pack for fifty pence.
GPRS data 20 pence per MB.
Do you know what the typical data demands are TomTom Plus?

Thanks. That looks just like the sort of thing that I need.

Three: unlimited for 50p/day, 2.50/week, 5/month (you have to buy an addon
in advance),
T-Mobile: 1pound/day cap (so if you use less than a pound's worth you only
pay for that, and (I don't think) you have to buy an addon. But it doesn't
take many KB to reach a pound)
ASDA: 20p/MB
'Fair use' probably applies to all.

Bugger! Really? Do you have a link to more information on this?
The reason I moved away from Virgin was their high data charges, and the
fact that they couldn't give me any information about whether it was likely
to improve... and that was only a couple of months ago.
(I assume that it is 30p/day if you use ANY data, and no charge of you use
none...??)
Ahh well, their loss... (hmm, actually, probably mine too!! :-( )

Well, I'm now paying 20p /Mb with ASDA (no cap), which I'm reasonably happy
with. Not sure what their roaming rate is, but I'm not that bothered, as I
only leave the country when I'm on holiday, and tend to try and keep my
phone turned off when away... :-)
Thinking about it though, as my usage rates are quite low, most days, I
probably use quite a bit less than a Mb, so I'm probably still be better off
with ASDA, even taking into account the occasional days I use more(ie my
charges with ASDA = more than 30p).

Depends on what you want to do with your data. For the small amount of data
I use, 2G is perfectly Ok...

I find 3g 400kbps slow enough, without going down to 2g GPRS <40kbps
Particularly as the cost is about the same

No.
3G too.
I believe they use T-Mobile's infrastructure.

The small print says the 30p/day tariff does not include "using your
phone as a modem", so presumably that means you're not supposed to use
it connected to a computer. They say that normal per MB rates will be
applied if you do.

Does everyone read that as 30p per day, regardless of whether you use or
not...?
So about £9 per month...
My costs are much lower than that being charged by the Mb, so I guess I'll
stay put for now.

My PAYG/Direct Debit Virgin Sim lets the phone lock on to 3G.
I got a free Orange PAYG Sim from their web site. It does not do 3G, :-(
I am told that the Orange shops will give you a free 3G PAYG Sim if make a
specific request, and pay £5 for usage..
3G network coverage is not universal, so it may pay to choose a network that
has 3G coverage where you require access.

How can they tell whether your using your phone as a modem or whether you
are using facilities within the phone to browse the web, send and receiver
