May sound daft but I have my phone (SE C905) set to pick up 2G/3G. When I
have the "H" symbol on the screen and try to access the web the phone says
    its "connecting via 2G/3G"
    Is this right?
    Taa

I suppose it says "connecting via 2G/3G" to differentiate it from
    "connecting via WiFi"

Would GPRS be counted as 2G or would 2G refer to EDGE?

2G would refer to both, GPRS is effectively 2.5G and EDGE [Enhanced Data
over a GPRS Environment] is 2.75

HSDPA is 3.5G, therefore it is stilla 3G connection

    Yes.

On the C905 HSDPA connection will be indicted by the presence of a 3G+
    symbol on the top line.

I'm assuming 1G data would probably be GSM data or ISDN.

None of these terms actually exist, it's all marketing and media.

In the context of this thread the phrase "connecting via 2G/3G" simply
means "connecting using the mobile network, not wireless lan".

1G couldn't support data, it only became possible with 2G (digital)
services, GSM Data on a CSD connection would get you a theoretical maximum
of 9.6kbps, GPRS up to 56kbps, EDGE about 4 times that. 3G upto 384 kbps and
then HSDPA has, depending on the standard used on the network, up to 7.2
    Mbps

Actually you could use modems on the AMPS and (E)TACS networks,
    e.g. Racal CDLC
