Problem with Kyocera kx5

I bought a used kyocera kx5 from 'eday', it has a us cellular logo on it & has the us cellular software etc on it.
I tried activating it over the phone but the cust rep was unable to do so, so i had done in the store.

The problem is..
I cannot send or receive messages, and or access easy edge or the internet.
I have the easy edge in the menu but it doesn't do anything.

i have talked to people in the store and they say this isn't really us cell phone, but they can put the right software on it and charge me for it.
my question is, if i have the easy edge choice in menu, shouldn't that mean i have the right rom/software?

Either way, can i get the right rom/software to put it in the phone myself or is there an alternative solution (especially for the pic messaging)
