I'm trying to get information from US Cellular on adding internet to my phone then adding tethering so I can work from my laptop. I keep getting directed to the regional manager to get information but he doesn't call back.

Does anyone currently do this? How much time on the internet can you get with their "Memory" per month. I know nothing really because no one I guess except this guy can tell me.

I want to work on weekends away from home and will be working on my website. There is no wifi to connect to that's close enough, so that's not an option unless someone knows an EASY way to get a signal over a small hill to a lightpole then to my laptop.

    Any help?

    Jen

Currently you can only tether on a smartphone with US Cellular, and depending on the model of phone a mobile browser may not be possible. Blackberrys HTCs Moto Qs and the new Samsung Smartphone can tether with a tethering "SOC" code added to the account. If you hack around and use your phone to tether you are at risk of getting redflagged. After which US Cell will send you a text automatically, asking you to stop your actions and contact customer service. The steepest penalty you can get for hacking around with your data and using a standard phone to tether, or smartphone without the SOC (It can be done, but I REALLY do NOT recommend it) is to have your service canceled. The reason is the tethering is a service you must pay for. Taking it without paying is, as most would know, stealing, and it would be treated as such.

NO! I don't want to "steal" it, i just want to know if anyone does this and how it works and how much internet time do you get for the monthly fee. I did get a call back from US Cell and what i was told was 100% different from what the lady in the store told me.

As far as picking up wifi, I can go and get it, but don't feel like sitting by a building all day to do it. They offer the wifi, but i'm in a bad spot so I'm not 1 of the lucky ones to get internet. Other campers around me get it, but i'm in a small valley.

It was figure out a way to do it, or not go camping, i can sit at a store using their wifi or just staying home.
Sorry if it sounded like I was looking to tether illegally, I was looking for info on people who have it. I'll have to go back and reread my post

Ok, i feel better. I reread my post and I'm asking for info on people who have this set up so where you got me looking to "steal" it is beyond me!
You made me feel bad to !

I didn't say you wanted to steal it, I simply pointed out that there are work arounds to the system, which are considered stealing. The basic need for cell tethering is a smart phone and a tethering package from USCC. I believe the package is $10.99 a month. Currently there is a 5GB a month limit to the data, however EVDO IS coming and that should change the limit per month, but I'm unsure of that. Launch for EVDO in New England is the end of July to the first week of August. Keep in mind that a smartphone also requires the smartphone data package of $24.95 a month, or more if on a Blackberry BES server.

Well thats where your post was leaning.
Anyway, more about that new service. What is it compared to what they have. I don't have a smart phone yet, but my boss might upgrade phones here, get an air card and let me have the phone during the summer on weekends, which is just super cool. I haven't heard of what your talking about. Can you explain a little what it is?

I have a Smartphone, the HTC Touch. You can tether it to your laptop with no problems. It's simple. You just connect your laptop and phone together with the USB - Mini-USB cord and select the option in the phone. I'm not sure what part of the country you are in, but here in Oklahoma EVDO was just launched. EVDO is high-speed broadband via your cellphone. Again, here in Oklahoma, even with EVDO there is still a 5 GB limit and the monthly plan is $15.99 a month. I take my laptop everywhere on the weekends! I can connect anywhere I have a signal. Any more questions, don't hesitate to ask!
