Just call customer service and find out the procedure to enable the MP3 format on the phone. The MP3 format compatibility is embedded in the firmware, you just need to get the code. It is even available on the internet, if you search for it.
As for the "WMA only" being illegal, understand that when you say "MP3 Player", it's just like calling Puff's brand facial tissue "Kleenex". Or calling your copier a "Xerox" even though it was made by Canon. Go to the south, every carbonated soda you buy will be called "Coke" by the natives, no matter where you go. My point is that MP3 is a ubiquitous term, and any digital music player gets the tag "MP3 Player". Just go to your local Best Buy if you don't believe me. There are numerous players on the market that are "WMA only", but they are still called "MP3 Players".
Good luck.
