LG VX8500 Verizon Rip-Off?

How come Verizon is advertising the LG VX8500 to hold 1000 songs (with the 2GB micro-SD card) when in fact it can really hold about 500 songs (using Verizon's method of 500 songs per Gig)?

After noticing that not all of the music I put on my 2GB card was being read by my LG VX8500 I decided to email LG customer support. Their response was:

"Dear Customer, Thank you for inquiring of LG Electronics. Your e-mail has been received. The maximum capacity of memory for the miniSD card supported by the phone is 1GB. If you use a higher capacity card, only the supported amount of that memory will be accessible. Please contact your service provider for additional assistance. Please feel free to contact us with any additional questions or concerns. Thank you again for contacting LG Electronics. Tyria E-mail Administrator Customer Interactive Center LGEAI"

So in fact, the VX8500 can only support a 1 GB card. Why is Verizon working hard to sell users the 2 GB card (even giving rebates when purchased with other accessories) when in fact, the card is half useless in the phone?

Annoying!

Hmmm....I just went to Verizon's Site, and brought up the phone. No where did I find that it says the phone supports a 2 gig memory card.

Please post a link that says it does that.

You sure this just wasn't at the store you were at?

Hey Boss, punkorambo is correct. Verizon is advertising the Chocolate with 2GB card capacity.

Chocolate By LG/LG VX8500 review by PC Magazine

Read down about 4 or 5 paragraphs.

Also, the flash demo for the Chocolate on Verizon's website does say it accepts up to 2GB microSD memory cards (click "Expendable Memory").

Re: LG VX8500 Verizon Rip-Off?

I returned the phone and the customer reps at the store all told me that LG was saying that this was their first phone to support 2 GB cards. All four reps at the store apologized and were surprised to see the email that I printed from LG tech support. Anyway, I am the proud new owner of an LG VX8300. (The 8500 didn't have a speaker phone anyway).

Re: LG VX8500 Verizon Rip-Off?

I still don't see anywhere on Verizon's Site where it says this. It may be posted all over the internet on other sites.....but no where does it says this on Verizon's.

I did click on the flash demo and didn't see anything there either. Oh well, they returned the phone anyway.

I would have gotten the 9800 or 8300 anyway before the 8500. I have been hearing nothing but bad things about the phone. The one good thing was the flashy interface it had, with the option of returning back to Verizon's UI when needed....that I do and did like.

Re: LG VX8500 Verizon Rip-Off?

You know what, I can't find it on the Verizon website either... anymore. I am sure I saw it there at one point and I have been to two Verizon stores in my area that both have cardboard stands for the chocolate both advertising 2 GB microSD cards. Maybe they are beginning to realize their error.

And so far so good with the 8300!

What complaints have you heard about this phone? I only got one in my shipment, so I haven't been able to get any customer feedback. The biggest thing that I can tell is getting used to the touch keypad and the 1,2, and 3 buttons being hard to push...but this stuff would be easy to get used to. All of the reviews I've read from tech people have nothing but good things to say about it (bluetooth, call clarity, signal strength, etc).

Re: LG VX8500 Verizon Rip-Off?

humm.. maybe everyone just assumed that since there's a 2gb card out that it could handle it. There are other compeating cingular phones that can handle 2gb.

Maybe in the next version of the software will it support 2gb. I believe that the way these phones are programmed it is a software restriction.

Did you click the "flash demo" link I included in my last post? It very clearly states that it takes up to 2GB cards.

Here is a screen shot:

Re: LG VX8500 Verizon Rip-Off?

Interesting... I bet it'll have 2gb ability it in the next upgrade. When the vx8200 came out the MP3 player wasn't even active. They've since gone through 2 revisions and released the vx8300 with even more player ability.

Bought my VX8500 on Friday. It's actually a decent little phone. I like the size.

You're absolutely correct about the touch sensitive buttons. They're a little tough to get used to, but work with it for two days, adjust the sensitivity to what suits you best. Experiment. You'll ge the hang of it.Only problem I've found is either a "Delayed response" or not sensitive enough response to the OK button. I end up hitting it a couple times, and find myself four or five levels down in the menu.

My first few hours with the phone, I was getting frusterated with the buttons and almost threw it accross the room. But I'm better now :-)

I'm still pissed off about the Verizon user interface. Seems that they've poluted all their phones with it. I've used Motorolas for at least four years now. Started with a V60, T710, and then a V510. All from Cingular, but I got really used to Motorola's software. And the interperative text inputting is so easy to type SMS. Aparently Verizon hadn't thought to put a similar feature in their UI.

Other than the bad text input, and the crappy verizon UI which you can't customize for beans other than the color, it's a decent phone.

As for the MP3 capabilities, I haven't tried working with that part yet. Need a cable or bluetooth adapter for my PC. I haven't even looked at the software yet.

Has anybody tried a non-verizon MicroSD card in these yet? Are we limmited to Verizon's products only? or can we use another vendor's solution. I'd rather not pay a fortune for a MicroSD card because it's got a verizon logo on it, if I can get a Lexar or PQI for a fraction of the cost.

Re: LG VX8500 Verizon Rip-Off?

You can use a MicroSD card from whatever company you want.

As for the Verizon UI, there are display themes on the phone that aren't the Verizon UI. I think they're called Rock or Jazz. Granted, it's not as customizeable as other carriers, but it's a start to get away from the Verizon UI.

Re: LG VX8500 Verizon Rip-Off?

I was eyeballing this phone extensively when it first came out. I did see in a tv commercial AND at the flash site where VZW was selling the phone, earbuds, and a 2gb card in a special bundle.

Right now on the VZW page, it's saying that the chocolate will hold up to a 4 gb sd card.... LINK

and just in case it gets changed, I'll screen cap the info on the site and post it here.
