Only get "missed call" notification if caller leaves voicemail?

Relevant information: I'm a 20 year-old guy who is technologically literate but never had the interest or inclination to pay much attention to cell phones or how they work.

That being said, I have a question. For a year or so I had a cell phone made by Motorola with Unicel as my service provider. Whenever someone called me and I didn't answer, I would get a "missed call" notification. I liked that. A couple days ago I switched to a newer LG phone with Verizon as my service provider. I've noticed that now no notification is given to me when someone calls and I don't answer. I've checked the "missed calls" list as well, and nothing appears there. I have been told that with Verizon I will only get a missed call notification if the caller leaves a voicemail. I don't know if that's true, but I know that I'm not getting missed call notifications, which are all that I really want.

I've looked through all the settings about twelve times now and I can't find anything relevant in there. I'm not sure which has more bearing on this question - my phone or my service - but if it helps, my phone is a vx8300.

Is there any way for me to get a missed call notification when I don't answer the phone?

If you are referring to a 2 min. reminder beep that you have as an option on some of the Motorola models, it isn't an option with the LG handsets. You will get one initial beep when the caller either hangs up, or the call goes to voice mail, but that is it. You would have to keep checking the outer screen periodically to see if a call was missed.
That's what I was referring to, the notification on the screen which I could check for periodically. Since I posted this thread, though, I've noticed I do get that notification (before, there was no indication I had missed a call whatsoever). I think before, when I wasn't getting the notification, my phone must have been out of service when it was called, and so I didn't get any notification. Does that sound plausible?
