Question about Verizon return policy

Ok, so I'm on my dad's family share plan. He has the main number on the account.

Recently my dad dropped his phone in water and without telling me, went to Verizon to get a new phone for free(after rebate). He had to renew a 2 year contract.

What kind of bothers me about what he did is that he went to Verizon and got a cheap LG phone that I could've bought for him on eBay for like $50, but instead he got it for free BUT he had to renew his contract. Honestly I hate being under contracts so I told him that I would buy him the phone on eBay.

Now what I want to know is if there will be a problem when we try to take his new phone back to Verizon? The phone is obviously open, but its still like new and we have everything still. I just want to know if there will be problems when we try to take it back and ask them to cancel the contract he just signed. Also, will we get all the money back that he originally paid?

He was able to return the phone without a hitch and the contract was also removed. His new phone that I bought for him on eBay is on its way.
