Whew I'm glad I could fit that all in the subject line! LOL!

So, my question is, what do "EV" and "1X" in the top left hand corner of my Samsung (network Verizon) phone mean, and how do they affect my ability to receive calls?

I ask because I am an Air Force wife and I want to be SUPER careful to stay in the best possible areas at peak call times so that I can receive calls. So do I want a high EV or a high 1X, or both, or neither? LOL! Help

1x is your cell phone signal - that affects your calls.

EV is EVDO signal - this is your data connection, so any internet access or some other verizon apps that use EVDO.

I have a MOTO W755. After disabling EVDO the 1X reception improved significantly.

If you don't need high speed internet access, it might be better if you disabled EVDO.
You can still send and receive text messages, and use you phone to talk in weaker signal areas.

The sticks you see while your EVDO icon is showing is the broadband speed reception used for data (i.e. internet browsing, emails, etc.) You may notice when you place a voice call the icon will automatically switch to 1X which is the band your voice communications are carried on.

You might even notice a reading of one or two EVDO sticks evaluating to full service 1X when you hit send.

By turning off your EVDO you are not increasing your voice reception you are only limiting your data access speed.

Re: What do EV & 1X mean in the top left corner of my phone & how do they affect call

1X is basically just there for placing calls and sending text messages in addition to slow, dial-up internet on the device.

    EV-EV-DO is basically all data.

Disabling EV-DO will not increase 1X service, as they're completely unrelated. EV-DO and 1X may be coming from COMPLETELY different towers altogether.

You will notice that by disabling EV-DO, your phone's battery will last longer as it will not be constantly searching for that EV-DO signal...generally, you want to try and keep both of them going.

VZW=Verizon Wireless area. EN=Extended Network area (No EVDO)

When I went to get the MOTO W755, the lady at the Verizon store advised against it because so many people had complained about poor performance (in VZW) they had removed the W755 from display, but said that it might perform better where I live (EN).

Took the phone into a large store, walked around, and got 1 to 2 EV bars and 0 1X bars. Rang my home phone and got a "breaking up" sound.

Took the phone home (EN) and it performed great in weak signal areas several miles from any tower. It performed slightly better than a RAZR V3m and a Samsung Adorn.

Disabled EVDO and went to the same store in the VZM area. this time it showed up
to 3 1X bars, mostly 1 to 2, placed a call and it sounded OK.

Maybe this is unique to the W755, but it definitely performed better in VZW with EVDO turned off. keithi

This article may better explain the differences between 1X and EVDO.

Today the 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 approved a set of standards for CDMA 1x Advanced. The software/channel card upgrade uses interference cancellation and radio link enhancements to increase voice capacity on CDMA 1x networks. According to the CDMA Development Group, the technology improvements (base transceiver station interference cancellation, improved power control, early frame termination, and smart blanking) can be rolled out all at once or deployed in phases across a network. In theory, 1x Advanced can quadruple the voice capacity of a wireless network using the same 1.25MHz of spectrum. The technology will be available in the second half of 2010. Additionally, an upgrade for devices, called 1X Voice and EVDO Data (SVDO), will allow phones to access EVDO data while on a 1x-based voice call. This will let end users send emails or surf the web while on a phone call.
