I'm going to need to get a new phone soon, and I'm going to be super picky about it. Here's why:
1. I live in New Mexico, which is like the 3rd World of the US. And I end up off the grid a lot, teaching rural kids programming (ironically).
2. I need a phone, not a computer. I want to be able to call someone when I get stuck on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. I don't need to be able to play games or run fancy apps, I can do that on my iPad.
Does anyone know of a phone that has Ridiculously long battery life, gets good reception and can endure dust, heat and small beatings? It shouldn't be a smart phone and it should have any glass. I would also be VERY happy if it was really light.
I've had my dinky, tacky little Nokia for 7 (yes Seven!) years. It rattles when you shake it gently, it has teeth marks in it from my cat, and it crashes regularly since I put it down on my computer once. But it doesn't run anything except a signal when it's closed and my battery lasts for about two weeks if I don't talk on it much. It doesn't run apps. All it is is a phone, that closes, with a keypad, and an antenna. I don't even know what the model is, but I'm sure they don't make it anymore.
The problem is that the speaker is messed up. It won't ring sometimes, and sometimes I can't hear the other person even though they can hear me. Tapping it into my palm fixes the problem a lot of the time, but it's pretty clear it's on its way out.
I'm going to miss it.

Re: Help Picking a Phone?
I would check out one of the Casio G'zOne phones; maybe the G'zOne Rock or Brigade. They both have good standby time, but the talk time is a little low (630 & 760 hours standby and 5 & 6 hours talk time). You might not be able to get the Rock anymore from Verizon but you could get it used. The Brigade is the newer feature phone (not a smart phone, but not a basic phone either).

Re: Help Picking a Phone?
My DH has the convoy. He drives dump truck in gravel and dirt pits. He lost it, found it later. It had been run over, buried in the dirt. And still works. It was free to boot. Might still be free. Call Verizon and ask. It's the Samsung convoy.
my wings are broke, so I'll be riding my broom stick for awhile.
