I have been trying to text to my friends in Italy without success. Does anyone have any suggestions - maybe changing carrier?

You have to enter the international access code(011) plus the country code(39) plus (Mobile Code*) plus the number.

*Since Telecom Italia Mobile has multiple Mobile Codes, you have to find out from your correspondent which code to use. Here is the complete list:

I have no idea what the "x" represents in some of the codes. It might be simpler to send email to the SMS gateway:

There are also smartphone applications that allow you to send text messages internationally.
