Re: Smartphone without data plan.
I often wonder the same thing but I fear there is no way around it. To my knowledge, smartphone=data plan. I've researched and researched and still find the same answer.
I have had my LG Dare (on Verizon) for 3 years; I didn't upgrade my phone. If I want to access the web it's pay-as-you-go. I don't even bother...and I got so disgusted with spam text messages I disabled texting.
I am still waiting for the "perfect phone," and as each new one comes out I always find there is something not quite up to par: The camera is too this, the case it too that, the resolution is not quite right. I figured that before I would jump into all that extra expense it better be a damn winner. So I am waiting and will be weighing the new iPhone against the latest Androids.
I'd be interested to know if anyone has any other information.

If there is a way to activate a smartphone on Verizon without a data plan I haven't found it. Verizon knows that the phone is a smart phone via the ESN.

Re: Smartphone without data plan.
Hi John,
I think my LG Dare was one of the first touch screens, and it still works fine. For me it was smart-enough. I even thought of upgrading my not-smart phone to perhaps a later model touch screen and I couldn't find one that had a decent review, so I am just staying where I am for now. The wireless companies are making out like bandits: texting costs them nothing and now with data plans changing supposedly for the better (for them, not necessarily for us) a lot of people are thinking tiwce about even getting involved, just like the original poster.
I guess for now the answer is: if you have a smart phone, be prepared for the data plan, there's no getting around it.
