What Is An ESN; Also Concerns About Buying a LG Optimus V

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post to this forum. I have decided to let go of my AT&T contract (too high) and either go with Boost Mobile or Virgin Mobile.
First question: what is an ESN and what do I with it?

Secondly: I am thinking about purchasing a LG Optimus from Ebay, because it's more affordable vs. in the store. What can anyone tell me that I should be looking for when buy this phone from Ebay? I have never purchased any electronics from Ebay before. Any advice would be appreciated.

ESN:
Electronic serial number - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ESN MUST BE CLEAR, otherwise it can never be activated.
Some phones are sold on ebay for spare parts and may not have clear ESN.
