cingular/att has no way of turning off your phone! you could lose coverage
or go into ROAM mode but that is the only capacity that any provider has. I
do work for cingular, it sounds to me like your phone is the problem or the
battery. TDMA is almost dead, time to look at new equipment!

I am the OP -- and I posted that a year ago!
All 3 of my TDMA phones would shut off as soon as I left the home rate area.
Don't ask me how Cingular did this, but it happened once they began
tightening the nooses around the necks of ATTWS customers that had not yet
switched to more expensive Cingular plans.
I went with Sprint in February 2006 and I've had no problems since. They
gave me 3 free phones, a better rate than I was getting from ATTWS/Cingular,
and they waived the setup fees on my new account. I couldn't be happier.

Good Luck! more sprint customers PORT to cingular every day than any other
company. Not every provider fits everyone's need.

In MY particular circumstances, Cingular's taking over the ATTWS TDMA
network was a nightmare, and Sprint has been quite reliable by contrast.
If I had gone with Cingular's GSM plan, I'd probably been very happy with
the service, but I was pissed that they wanted to take away all my loyalty
discounts that I had earned as an ATTWS customer for years, and to charge me
as though I had just come in as a new customer. So I left.
Life goes on. My needs are modest, and Sprint has been just great FOR ME.
I just have such a bad taste about Cingular's handling of this that I'd
never go back. Juvenile, perhaps, but I won't give them one cent of my
money. We can both survive without each other.
