it's already the No 1 smartphone, but how far it goes into the throw
away phone market is yet to be determined.

apple only builds products that last, so it's a bit of a unfamiliar
experience for the uncompetitive cell market.

    we'll see...

By 2010 it will be just another mid-range phone. Oh wait- it already is.

I finally retired my Nokia 5120, purchased in 1999, when AT&T shuttered
their TDMA network in February 2007. (It was on Beyond Wireless, an AT&T
reseller, as a "backup phone" up in mountains beyond the resch of the GSM
    network.)

My Nokia 8290, purchased in 2001, is still in occasional use today. (It's
my "stunt double" phone I take to places like the beach, or cleaning the
gutters, when I don't want to risk damaging or losing a $300 PDA phone.)

I have still-perfectly working Nokia phones that predate the first iPOD,
never mind the iPHONE, so spare us the "longevity is unfamiliar to
    cellular" nonsense.

Two or three years ago, I even reactivated my first cellular phone, an old
Tandy CT-301 analog-only "brick phone" (built by Nokia back when they were
primarily an OEM rather than a name-brand,) that I bought in _1993_. A
retailer friend needed a remote credit card terminal installed far away
from the nearest POTS line for a weekend fair. I fibbed to Beyond Wireless
and told them the Tandy was a digital phone so they'd activate it, then
hooked my trusty data/fax interface cradle that had an RJ-11 jack in the
back for connecting the CC terminal to. Analog cellular data tops out
between 4800 and 7200 baud on a good day, and several connection atempts
failed and had to be retried, but everything worked as advertised, and we
had a remote credit card line for the weekend for free (Beyond used to
activate any old TDMA phone for free and threw in 35 starter minutes. We
still had a few minutes left after the weekend and the phone and data
cradle went back into my junque box in the garage!)

sure, but that is only if apple stands completely still.

apple is currently 4-6 years ahead of any other phone in this class, by
next year they'll be 5-7 years ahead.

that's just how apple works... they push the envelope more than any
other technical firm on the planet. look at the Mac, it's WAY beyond
Windows & Linux machines, 7-9 years at this point.

the same will happen with their handset line since the cell industry is
very weak / uncompetitive, hasn't ever been exposed to genius level
    engineering like Apple has...

    you'll see...

I have very high standards- the fact that I didn't fall for the iPhone hype
    proves that.

No 3G, no word processor app, no GPS, no seamless sync...... they are 4-6
years BEHIND any other phone in its class.

Minor insignificant detail. Oxford might be working on a plan to implement
this everywhere and for free. lol

what hype? i have seen or heard of any surrounding the iphone. it's just
the facts... the fact you are jealous of iphone users... and the fact
you are still using Xnews/5.04.25, so by default you don't have high
    standards.

someday you'll join the technically astute crowd, but until then...
    you'll remain jealous.
