    iPhone "Wannabee"

    by barefeats

Though I own an iPhone for business, I use Verizon Wireless for person
use. I wanted a phone that closely matched the features of the iPhone.
The LG Voyager, on paper, came close.

After a few days using it, I assure you it is not an iPhone
equivalent. However it is a keeper until the iPhone is offered to
Verizon users. Plus it offers some features missing from the current
    iPhone.

Take, for instance, the GPS location feature. It, along with VZ
Navigator, makes the Voyager a portable GPS system (saving me $700
which I was going to spend on a TomTom 720).

If you activate 3G Broadband Access on the Voyager, it costs you $60/
month but speeds up internet browsing. However, when I tested it with
DSL Reports (mobile test), the speed increased to only 420Kbps (from
150Kbps in National Access mode). I never saw 1.4Mbps regularly
attained by the Verizon Broadband ExpressCard in my laptop.

BTW, the Phone Memory of the Voyager is showing a total of 184MB. (The
Phone Scoop did not list this.) Compare that to 8GB standard on the
iPhone. However, you can add a MicroSD 8GB card to the Voyager for
    about $100.

There you have it - a phone that ultimately costs more than an iPhone
and the UI doesn't come close. BTW iPhone gets GPS location and more
in new firmware to be released in a couple of weeks at Mac World.

No it doesn't- it gets a cell tower triangulation "guesstimate" that
statically "pinpoints" your location to within 1500 feet.

It's sole purpose is to approximate your position so you don't have to
tediously type in your current location to find the nearest POIs.

....oh, and most other Google Maps-capable phones already have it.

I tried it- it's nice if your phone doesn't have a real GPS, or the
capability to use an external one.

Larry you need to check out one of those Geek Brief video podcasts
where they recently reviewed the 810. they liked it (rated it a 75
compared to the iPhone) but it had so many simple problems they could
not believe it. They asked for a 810 owner to call then and tell them
how to preform some simple tasks such as hooking it up to certain WiFi
    locations.

I don't remember if it was Geek Brief, CNet, Calley, Molly Wood or
Amanda Coglin but if you do a search you could probably find it. It
was a December show. I got the video through iTunes. I meant to tell
you about it before iTunes deleted it as new content came in. I only
keep the three last eposiodes of most of that stuff and some of those
    videos are updated daily.

I went to the iTunes store and looked up Geek Brief TV.
The nokia 810 review on 12/20/07 was GBTV #278 (HD) a brief
examination of Nokia 810 by Cali Lewis.

Great series. Lots of great BBC docs posted there. I just watched a
couple of programs related to Hitler's British girlfriend and Hitler's
Favorite Royal, who was forced by Queen Victoria to become a German duke,
and became a Hitler supporter...ruining his life.

I don't rate the 810 as high as the 800 because you're forced to carry the
keyboard all the time, even if you're not going to use it. The internal
GPS loading the battery when not needed also is a negative. You can't type
on the little keyboard, anyways like you can this one, the Nokia SU-8W
Bluetooth external. If I'm not going to use the GPS, I leave mine home.

I couldn't find the video on anything that didn't want me to "subscribe" to
something to be spammed to death. No thanks. They didn't think enough of
it to put it on the bunch on YouTube.
