It seems like about a month ago in the DFW area, 3G service on my 8525 (Mob
    6) would drop to EDGE service during peak traffic/voice call periods. That's
acceptable to me for those periods, particularly if resources are spent to
extend the 3G footprint, not increase the speed for just peak periods.

The idea of Google Maps not working in 3G was posted on this newsgroup. That
seemed to be the case for both the DFW area and north to the Oklahoma City
area. But, I could get Google Maps My Location service during the peak
periods when the data stream slowed to EDGE.

As of Friday, 'My Location' is grayed out. Maybe ATT thought it was too much
    competition to TeleNav.

There is a new location device due in the March/April timeframe that will
make this a moot point and ATT is not in on it.

A Garmen GPS uses satellites and is more precise.
