I plugged an old (2004?) blue AT&T SIM card (8931-0380-....) into my
Samsung SGH-i617, and voice calls work!
(both phones are locked for AT&T)
The old service (mMode) is a family plan, costs less (considering 2
lines of service), and has unlimited text messaging, which I don't
have with my new service (unlimited PDA data plan).

Would I be losing anything significant (compared to the new AT&T 3G
SIM card in the Blackjack2) if I use the old SIM card and add an
    unlimited data plan to it?

According to the sales guy at my local AT&T owned store, the iPhone
ships with a SIM card already installed, and they will not sell the
phone without the iPhone Plan to go with it.

Technically speaking, you might not be able to make use of 3G services
    with a non-3G SIM.

I'd be surprised if that card will do 3G. 3G authentication requires
a separate application on the card (the "USIM"), and Cingular
orange cards didn't support it prior to the 64k versions so I
doubt that the blue cards did either.

You could maybe determine this if your Blackjack has a 3G-only
network menu setting (though AT&T often deletes those menus from their
    phones).

The original poster said nothing about the iPhone. He was asking about
3G service, not the 3G iPhone. In fact, he specifically called out the
    BLACKJACK!

You're right. Why did I see iPhone, when it wasn't there? I must have
iPhone on the brane. My apologies.

The voice service will probably work, but I don't know about the data.
The old SIM doesn't support 3G. Whether or not it will fall back to
EDGE would probably depend on the hardware.

If he buys the phone from an AT&T store, they will almost certainly
check his SIM and as a matter of course "give" him a new one along with
a new service plan contract. They will probably refuse to sell a 3G
    phone without a 3G SIM.

All phones nowadays are installed with a 3G sim.
I traded my phone for a day with a friend to see if I liked his phone.
He does not have any data package on his phone. His sim had the 3G logo on
    it.

My non-3G phone has a sim chip in it that says 3G on it also. I bought
it a little over a year ago. ;-) I assumed it was just AT&T
standardizing on a single inventory item.

The company I work for makes a certain type of electrical game--we do
the same thing. Regardless of the specific features the customer wants,
we tend to build only one type of item and it's configured during
install. That way we have fewer supply chain problems by having too many
parts that are all sort of the same. Instead of buying a couple thousand
of part A, a couple thousand of part B, etc., we designed a single part
that does the function of part A and B, etc., and only have to stock one
part. And we get a huge discount from our supplier by buying tens of
    thousands of the single part.

yes, even all 2.5G iphones have a 3G sim card installed.

I am trying to keep the cheaper AT&T plan with unlimited text
messaging, but use the BlackJack2 phone's PDA features and have
    unlimited internet access.
3G speed is not critical to me when I am mobile.
I am more concerned about battery life when I am mobile.
(I have been playing with bandsel.exe on my BlackJack2 to try to shut
    off 3G, with no success)

My guess is AT&T will not allow me to add any new service feature to
the (very) old plan, and coerce me to move to a new plan.

It only wasted trees if the people I e-mailed it to printed it. When it
left my hands, it was still only a set of Microsoft Word documents.
Entirely recyclable electrons. But it was still a pain to write.
Something like 20 pages of explaining how we ended up sending a
    corrupted file to a regulator.

I'm still brain dead from the experience.
