Apple is reportedly testing the limits of its overseas manufacturing
facilities in order to keep up with demand for the new iPhone 3G, with
production already cranked nearly sevenfold compared to the first-
    generation model.

Foxconn, the company's Taiwanese handset and iPod manufacturer, has
recently ramped production of the new iPhone to 800,000 units per
week, says TechCrunch, citing a person "close to Apple with direct
    knowledge of the numbers."

    52 * 800,000 = 41,600,000

Also one should note news from a UK carrier indicates pending release
of still another new Apple phone this fall which will be even cheaper
for the Prepay / no contract crowd.

I am not sure if this will be welcome in the USA unless that one can
be permanently locked by AT&T to keep out T Mobile users.

Prepay hardware is usually $130 or less in the USA.

They've only sold a million G3s or so and are producing, according to you,
800K/week, but are not, now, selling 800K/week.

So, I ask pointedly, why are they always short of stock on something that's
piling up in a warehouse somewhere? From your report we are swimming in
    iPhones!

Sears used to do this, you know......Bait and Switch.

    Maybe ATT's behind it.

Larry how do you know Apple is not selling or planning to sell close
to a million iPhones a week worldwide?

Just because they don't sell them in NC doesn't mean anything other
than that those NC rednecks still can't afford the new cheap iPhone.

The Canadian Telco Rogers placed another 3.5 million dollar order for
more iPhones last alone last week and they are one of the world's
most unpopular telcos because they charge so much with a 3 year
    contract.

Rogers just had 3.5 mil laying around and they wanted to see what it
    would buy?
Why didn't they blow it on Nokias or even the Canadian Rim BlackBerry?

Before that order on July 14 Reuters reported...

TORONTO (Reuters) - Rogers Communications Inc said on Monday the
launch shipment of Apple Inc's iPhone 3G had sold out in most cities
in Canada and marked the best weekend of handset sales in Rogers'
history. Rogers, which owns Canada's biggest wireless carrier, said in
a statement that "tens of thousands" of the multimedia handsets were
sold, but did not provide exact figures.

Yes, a tragedy, but bottom-feeders are picking over local landfills.

Simply because GM is "selling or planning to sell" 50,000 new Escalades per
    week.

    It cannot be SUSTAINED....

The last time it wasn't sustained for more than 2 weeks before reality set
in and prices started falling.....BECAUSE OF REDUCED DEMAND.

NOONE drops the price when demand is high....even Apple.

Shame some Apple hater is confusing US sales of iPhone with Worldwide
    sales of iPhone 3G.

    SIMPLE

Because the demand is greater than 800,000 a week?

I remember Radio Moscow's coverage of the moon landing on July 20, 1969.
The USA had set up a complete barrage of shortwave stations to get through
commie jamming for this event, in an effort that it would even penetrate
the bamboo curtain and people in China (then in the throes of the Great
Proletarian Cultural Revolution) and North Korea would know.

The USSR and Eastern Europe couldn't block it; even in the iron curtain
days enough news from the west still leaked (the bamboo curtain was far
tighter). So, rather than deny it, they covered the event in the Radio
    Moscow way.

There was the normal (IIRC 30 minute) news broadcast of various matters
throughout the world. At the very end...:

"At this moment, two Americans have landed on the moon. And that's the
end of the news from Radio Moscow."

The Nazis at Nasa got lucky they didn't blow the whole thing wide open
with proof the astronauts were in EARTH orbit, not on the Moon.

Somebody made a deal. The Van Allen Radiation Belts are no joke and in
the way. Why no return trip after trip? Why have we never gone back?
Why don't the astronauts do interviews about moon trips? Why has no
other Americans or Russians ever left low earth orbit......

Because they can't....The radiation will kill them.

Look for an interview with the crew on TV, radio newspapers after their
return from the greatest trip in human history. What's the big secret?
    WHAT ARE THEY HIDING.....??

I'm having a late dinner at Denny's, tonight as I just got out of Best
Buy buying their cheapest USB keyboard, a Dynex I'm typing on into
rdesktop back home to the WinXP box. What a PLEASURE to have a full,
real keyboard to type this message on even better than the Bluetooth
folding keyboard, now that the maemo hackers have gotten USB Control app
working. I can plug any keyboard into the little tablet for typing when
there are long documents to do. The cabling is a 6" miniB male to A male
with a female to female gender changer on the end to mate with the
keyboard connector. Tommorrow, I'm going to get rid of all that and,
because the cable comes out of the keyboard in exactly the right place on
the right side of the tablet where its USB port is located, I'll make a
really short cable up with a USB miniB plug directly on the keyboard for
    this purpose only.

A tiny computer with a real keyboard for word processing. How cool.
Hooked to Windows XP desktop on Remote Desktop, even the function and
special code keys on both sides of this Dynex DX-WKBD make WinXP do
    exactly what it is supposed to...(c;

but not iphones. they will be used just like ipods for 5, 6 years.

Then let's do the math on that. $3.5m Canadian equates to about 15-
16000 phones (at best). Assuming a thousand sales outlets (very
conservatively), that means 15-16 phones per outlet.

    Wow- that's impressive (not).

I suspect they will- for a couple of weeks until the novelty wears off.
Likely the sales pattern will parallel the iPhone Sr.- a ton sold at
firrst, catching the early adopters and fashionistas, then sales level off
    at a sower pace.

3.5 mil divided by the probable $300-350 per unit wholesale cost, is 10,000-
    12000 units.

To be fair, however, their iPhone data plan is their best value data plan.
The data for "business" phones (RIM, WinMo) offers far less data for higher
    costs.

10,000 phones isn't a lot of cellphones, even in a relatively small market
(compared to the US) as Canada.. I suspect they've spent as much or more
on many different models of handset including Nokia and RIM models.

Then they've spent far in excess of 3.5 mil already..

And again, givven the god-awful data plans available from Rogers, you've
got two markets for iPhones- those that actually want iPhones, as well as
    ANYONE wanting a decently-priced multi-GB e-mail/web browsing data plan
regardless of what phone it's on!
