because if someone has firewire on their computer they are likely to
actually use it and have a firewire cable.
nevertheless, a cable can be purchased for as little as a couple of
dollars.

nope.

only the entry level macbook and the macbook air. every other mac has
firewire 800, not firewire 400. i suppose you'll say apple is dropping
ethernet now, because the macbook air doesn't have a built-in ethernet
port either.

there are a lot of people who simply have no clue.

LOL. Your cluelessness knows no bounds.
Yet before not having USB was a "major" issue for the iPad according to you.
Jed, you're a lovely guy but you really redefine cluelessness. 99% of
Mac users know what firewire is. Hell, I do and I don't even have a Mac

No, they are not likely to use it. *Only* if they have FW devices they
will actually have a FW cable.

To use it for what exactly if you don't have any FW devices?

Actually, yes. After all, even apple has omitted the FW port on several of
their computers lately
And now with the advent of USB3 even the speed advantage of FW is
dwindling, if not completely gone

....which really doesn't have anything to do with this.
If anything, it would be the reason why I did advocate that the iPad have
any firewire ports. All of the likely devices to use one like a camera or a
hard drive or even ipods have pretty much gone the way of the dodo.
Although firewire is and has always been a better for high speed use.
It got strangled by market mediocrity.

what? you're saying that from a windows or linux perspective, not a mac
one... firewire is extremely common on mac hard drives, scanners,
printers, cameras... usb is okay if you are in a pinch, but it's not
good for backups or cloning a machine.
> They are even dropping firewire from some new Macs.
not really, the macbook air is too thin, so only the very basic macbook
doesn't have FW. firewire is a true, powered bus, usb is tiered-star, so
usb is worthless if you have a lot of data. usb is mainly for keyboards
and mice.
> There are probably a lot of Mac users that have no clue what firewire is.
no, all mac users know what firewire is, it's the main port people use
for data transfer.

hard drives yes, scanners not so much lately, printers nope, cameras
only very high end where file sizes are huge.

the main port? for most people, more data is transferred either over
ethernet or wifi, not to/fro another hard drive.

yes, i was implying bulk data transfers like backups and cloning drives,
not general network data...

I am saying that from the Best Buy, Frys, Amazon, NewEgg perspective.

No, I am not coming from a Cupertino reality bubble perspective.

you are referencing that from the newbie market... but once these new
users see the power of firewire, they burst out laughing at USB...
restart a mac, hold down the "T" key, and the party begins... windows
and linux have nothing like it...

....yeah, right.
All of the willfully ignorant types that flock to Apple care about the
finer points of external busses? Tell us some more tall tales while you're
at it.
Do they recompile their own Darwin kernels too?

Except this isn't a "macos" thing it is a BIOS thing.
See. Here's the perfect example about how your drivel about the n00bs
that run Macs caring about the technical superiority of Firewire is so
totally bogus. You can't even get the technical details straight when you're
trying to lay down the FUD.

many people prefer firewire because it's much faster, particularly
firewire 800.

a few do, but not many.

macs don't have a bios, but nevertheless, since it's supposedly just a
bios thing, which pc bios has it? oh right, none of them.

indeed you can't.

no, there aren't any ignorant users within the mac realm, they are
informed users or they wouldn't have chosen the mac in the first place.

sure, if they want to... the mac gives them complete freedom.

macs don't have a bios... so it's clear you don't know much about
computing... macs have Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) so it's clear
you have no clue...

yes, you are extremely ignorant about the technical details... you
thought macs has a BIOS! wow, thanks for illustrating how dumb you are...

By that logic, Apple would have done in Microsoft in the 80s.
Obviously they didn't. Apple users are just like any other consumer.
They follow fads and they pay attention to advertising. That is the key
thing that distinguishes the Apple of today (marketing).

I wonder how they would respond to this claim at the Genuis Bar.
Being in tech support they could probably use a good laugh.

no, apple was always the top of the industry, it's just it took longer
for the bottom 90% to understand apple's ruling position.

i'm not speaking for hadron, but i think everyone in the world agrees
linux was a massive failure... it died out a couple of years ago... now
linux is only used in servers and a couple embedded devices... apple's
osx took over the unix space and will sell 100 million devices this year.
just as predicted...
