Our son just returned from a year long venture in Germany.
He had in Germany a simple Sagem my220x cellphone on German T-Mobile.
When turning the phone on here in Chicago O'hare - it appears to not see a
    signal ?
    The specs indicate GSM 900/1800
and would have thought it would at least see the ATT or TM services ?

    AT&T Mobility is 850/1900
T-Mobile USA is 1900 and 1700 band IV (AWS)

    bummer -
I thought that the GSM would make things more common,
but didn't look at the freq specs
as I think my Blackberry Bold 9000 has
    850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900

    ok... had a friend's old Blackberry 9000 from AT&T -
He has moved to an AT&T iPhone -

Found one of those online "unlocking sites"
and got the unlock code for the BB 9000 and it's IMEI.
It is now unlocked... the SIM info shows "disabled".

Took the SIM from the German T-Mobile phone
and put it into the BB 9000.
It's weird - the BB powers up and only sees the AT&T GSM network - both 3G
    and 2G -
    but no T-Mobile GSM network....

That's why quad-band phones are called world phones.
