Unfortunately, when receiving calls, there's no good way to know if it's
roaming or not because the roaming indicator is so inaccurate.

    LOL!

I am a Field Service rep for Dell. I use my phone a LOT and that's why I'm
trying different things. The AT&T service in this area is OK but doesn't
cover everywhere I need to go.

I pared my bill down to $48 a month but had to give up the data. I use
about 7MB a month, and that's about $14, so my bill is going to be ~$55-65
a month. Better than the $94 I was paying. Pageplus offers UNLIMITED for
    $45 a month with 20 gigs.

I sometimes use ~1400 minutes a month, but I have Tech support listed as
Friends and Family, so when I call them it's not counted. On a 900 minute
plan I have gone up to ~750 minutes, but when you figure in the F&F I have
hit ~1100-1400 minutes a month. Depends on how long I'm on hold...the 1200
minute plan would be good if I could make sure I keep right about that.

Good idea about using VM in roaming.

Recent changes at Verizon caused my roaming triangle to light even in
    Charleston city.

To reload it all with current data, *22890 SEND and tell it to activate
    the phone.

After that's done, *22891 SEND and it will reload the NEW PRL, which my
phone currently says is 52015, which isn't even in the same sequence as
the old PP PRL that was loaded in the phone before....a totally different
    number.

The roaming light nonsense went away, but now the phone seems to do a lot
of switching to the Alltel system and my [EV] indicator changes to [D],
which doesn't make any difference to me as I only use it as a phone.
When a call comes in and it's [D], the phone beeps a service tone and
switches to [EV] and starts to ringing. Not sure what it's doing when it
does that but my BALANCE only drops 4c/min, which is the only other
important thing to me, other than having a phone that works fine.

Give that a try to load up the new crazy PRL on VZW's Alltel+Verizon
    system. That worked for me...

Typical bull**** Larry response. One thing I've noticed over the years,
is that you don't like it when people point out you're wrong. And it's
really pathetic to see a guy in his 60s or 70s lash out like an 8-year-
    old child.

I have three phones I am carrying right now; my Verizon Palm workhorse,
the LG VX Verizon gave me when they stole Unisys, and a Nokia E61 running
PureTalk. I had the Nokia in my pocket the other day, and I called
PagePlus to activate the LG; had to wait about a minute or so and then she
    put the phone on-line.

When I got in the car I paired my Palm to the speakerphone and took off. I
noticed later it wasn't paired, so I held the button. IMMEDIATELY someone
ansered, "Thank you for calling PagePlus, how can I help you?" Ooops. At
this time I'm dumbfounded, and told the guy I had called earlier and I
don't know how I got him. He chuckled and we ended the call.

I push the button again, and AGAIN "Thank you for calling PagePlus, how
can I help you?". Now I'm really stumped, I apologized and hung up. THEN I
realized the Nokia I had used to call PP initially was paired with the
    speakerphone!

So, out of three calls, the longest wait I had was about 2 minutes, and I
got people RIGHT HERE that were ready to help me. Now, I have not had any
problems with Verizon's CS, unless you count the nested menus as a
    'problem' (I do...)

Why three phones, you wonder? The Verizon Palm is my work phone, it's mine
but I use it for work since it works almost everywhere. The Nokia was an
'experiment' on AT&T's network through PureTalk, and while the CS is also
excellent, the coverage isn't everywhere I need it. I think they're done.

Over the next week I'll carry the PP phone and find out how good their
coverage is. There is only one area I got to, not too frequently, that is
in Roaming, but everywhere else is on network. If I get as good coverage
as I do with Verizon, I think PP haas a new customer.

I can't see PureTalk making it. They're still much more expensive than
PagePlus, and they don't offer MMS or data. The good thing is that you
can use any AT&T GSM or unlocked GSM phone with them, and they're a bit
cheaper than other prepaid GSM providers. Still 4x the minimum monthly
cost of PagePlus but with coverage that is not as good. It's rather
strange that the prepaid service with the best coverage by far, is also
the least expensive, but not so well known.

Remember, the only way to know for sure if the coverage is roaming is if
you have to do double dialing. I've had the roaming indicator be on and
I've known I was not on Verizon, but it was still not roaming.

If I didn't have this job, I wouldn't need data or all the coverage. The
Unlimited plan from PT is $39 a month. Unlimited talk and text, that's
    pretty good price.

Interesting. The particular area I am referring to is listed under PP's
map (which is Verizon's PrePaid coverage map) as being "Roaming".

For everywhere else I go almost daily, it's shown as on network.

Everything is subject to change. I'd bet within a year all roaming will be
    defunct.

    I hope...

Except that the last CM discount code expired on October 6th. I'm
sure another is just around the corner, but the OP should set up a
callingmart.com account to insure he gets the discount offers.

Of course, if you'd read the entire thread, you would have read where I
said, point-blank, that I DO NOT believe that all of his contributions
are useless. He DOES have useful information to offer.

The problem is when he makes stupid, *incorrect* pronouncements about
carriers he's never used. If said statements are about Sprint or T-Mo,
I'll correct him because I was a customer of Sprint for several years
and I am a current customer of T-Mo, and I am much more familiar with
those companies' policies than he is.

When he's wrong, he's wrong, but $DEITY forbid you ever correct him,
    he'll get really pissed.

    ?

    Wouldn't any "non-smartphone" Verizon-capable candy-bar style phone work
    with PagePlus?

If you literally mean "from them," i.e., sold by PagePlus, there is no
question that PP sells a very limited set of phones.

Hmmm...I want to port over my Palm because I like it so much. I was able

OK....<shaking nervously>...I did it. I ported my number from Verizon to
PagePlus...it accepted the ESN from my Palm. Now watch me get sent to the
"roaming hole" three days next week...

I tried calling Voicemail and got "your call cannot be completed. Please
hold the line or try an external operator to complete your call" so the
    port is in process...

And within <15 minutes it was complete! My same phone number, and my
