In many product categories, Apple is a fast-follower, but their products
succeed where the products of the companies that came out with the first
products in the category failed. Apple is extremely good at
understanding the key deficiencies that explain why similar products
fail, and correcting those when they enter a market.

The new Macbook Air is a response to the explosive success of the
netbook, but it's a far better product than most netbooks. Unfortunately
for Apple. there are a bunch of thin and light higher performance,
higher functionality, 3 pound, 11.6" notebooks being introduced at the
same time as the 11.6" MacBook Air, at comparable prices. So the MacBook
Air may continue to be a very niche product, attractive to hard core
Apple fans but not to those looking for a thin and light with a full
complement of I/O ports and more storage.

Tablets have been around for years, but other than some vertical
applications, they failed in the consumer segment because they were too
heavy, too expensive, and had mediocre battery life because the
manufacturers were designing them to run Windows applications. Apple
decided that defining a limited set of applications that could run on a
lower performance processor would be an acceptable compromise in return
for lighter weight, lower price, and much longer battery life. They were
right. The iPad is an amazingly cool product, and the next generation
will take care of the few issues with it such as the lack of a camera.

But you are overlooking the fact Macs are built far better than any PC
on the market. They also have much better software availability and
value over time.

The Windows PC market has pretty much died out in the USA, everyone
wants a Mac or nothing. This was all predicted 20 years ago and the fact
Apple is the 2nd most valuable company on the planet shows customers
have spoken.

Yes, the Macbook Air was not a big seller and the follow-up is also
likely to be a very niche product. Even among Apple aficionados, the
regular Macbook is a much more appealing product. For those looking for
a thin and light that are not tied to Apple there are much more
appealing products in the Windows space. I expect that Apple may come
out with a product between the Macbook Air and the smallest Macbook in
order to compete in that market.

They need to revamp their Macbook line in order to catch up, hardware
wise, with the higher end laptops from Dell, HP, Sony, Acer, etc. No
high end laptop buyer is going to put up with the lack of an integrated
HDMI port.

You really don't need HDMI with 802.11n, iTunes 10 allows you to simply
share your videos right into your TV, so the days of HDMI cables are
coming to an end.
