Not sure everyone has seen this, but it's clearly worth 48 minutes to
see why we are all involved with computing.
Steve Jobs is the Thomas Edison of our times, so enjoy...

Why? Because Michael Dell and Steve Ballmar aren't as smart as Thomas
Edison?

no, there is nothing about Steve Ballmer, so you'll be more healthy once
you watch it. This just shows how Steve Jobs created the industry we all
live and work in... great stuff!

Yeah, me too. This cult of personality that surrounds Jobs is
nauseating, and overlooks guys like Jack Tramiel who made computing
*truly* affordable for the masses, and not just some "box designer"
w/an affinity for zen based ergonomics (at elitist prices) and gets
all the credit for the hard work of many an engineer that helped him
and Apple get where they are today (going back to the 'Woz' era).
Those are the folks who did/do the REAL 'heavy lifting' at Apple.
The ironic thing is Republicans often cite Jobs and Apple as a great
American success story. The truth is the way Apple has been run under
Jobs, and Apple products are more of the myopic vision of *one* man,
but designed by committee, Apple (to me) is more of an example of a
socialist state.
Hey, I generally don't get too involved in the Windows vs. Mac
flamewar as I do think Apple does deserve a lot of credit, but I
simply can't stand some of the Mac fanbois who practically deify Jobs.
But then, Steve Ballmer irks me to end at times too... I'm really
sick of the techno-priesthood and their cultic followers.

Woz was the guy with the vision.
Woz was the nerd.
Woz was the guy I respect, much more so than Jobs.

Ballmer is Jobs to Bill Gates's Woz. Although, technically, Gates wasn't
a techie either.
Bill Gates, like Woz, was the guy with enough vision and talent to put
his company into the history books.
Ballmer impresses me about as much as Jobs does, which is to say, not
much at all.

but Tramiel never did anything important, he was a bottom feeder looking
to make a quick buck on the uneducated. At least Steve pushed society
forward at a fair price.
plus Tramiel bought & killed Atari, so he is no friend of techies.

actually, Jobs is the visionary behind everything we use today in
computing, Woz was BRILLIANT in the 70's, he was behind the success of
the 6502, and first inexpensive floppy drive, but he didn't grow much
beyond that.
most everything you do and use today was because of Jobs.

Jobs has been influential in:
* WIMP computing
* Touch computing
* The music industry's move to downloadable media
* Fully digitally animated films
and more. There are few who compare to his influence. No doubt.

There is a fantastic tour of a new computer museum, on YouTube I think,
and Woz, himself, guides you on a tour of his favorite subject. It's too
early in the morning to go searching for it, myself. Great stuff.
If you look in the 1980 Ohio Scientific microcomputer catalog on the net,
the dealer list in the back, you'll find Seely Communications, Sumter,
SC. That was US! We had a 74MB 14" hard drive stolen from the
minicomputer world and a 3-processor monsterbox of 6502 that ran OS-65/U
and it's heavily extended BASIC interpreter, a Z80 for CP/M and a
Motorola 6800. You could switch processors to run whatever you liked.
IBM PC put a halt to that, almost overnight, from the big elephant in the
room.
For the iPhoners, I think I still have a copy of DoubleDOS around here
that made MS-DOS multitasking, that newfangled feature from Apple in
2010.

Gee, he only introduced the PET computer, Vic 20, and ultimately the
C=64,and got them to a reasonable price affordable by most people.

If by 'fair price', you mean society was just ready to plonk $5K down
for early Macs when the Amiga (also a Motorola 68K) was a far more
elegant system, with a superior OS that was fully preemptive,
multithreaded, multitasking, having a high degree of POSIX compliance,
and could be had at 1/3rd the price, I guess so then....

You got the cart before the horse. Tramiel trounced Atari, then
*bought* it from Warner, and rebuilt the company back up and saved it.
Talk about revisionist historianism....
