I am considering buying an iPhone 4. I currently have ATT service and
use a Laptop Connect card to access the Internet from my laptop when
    traveling.

Will purchasing the iPhone cause any changes in this arrangement (I
pay $60 per month for unlimited tethering of my laptop)?

    Many thanks,

    Bob

the iphone plans no longer include unlimited data and tethering is
extra, but maybe you can somehow upgrade your phone and keep your
    current plan. call at&t.

The iPhone costs more than $60/mo. Many people it is 100/mo. ATT
charges extra to tether to a laptop. But you can "Jailbreak" it and do
it for free, but it's not really on the up and up, it's in a grey area.

I love my iPhone, but if I were buying a smartphone today, I would by a
Droid on Verizon. Tethering on that is free.

My brother's on Verizon and just purchased a Droid. The tethering option
is *not* free, at least not on his plan. Things have changed.

There was a very good article on lifehacker about tethering yesterday.
I recommend you check it out.

I can see charging for tethering if you're on the unlimited data plan,
but if you're on the 150MB (Verizon) or 200MB (AT&T) then it really
takes a lot of chutzpah for the carrier to charge you a second time to
    use your data allocation.

Pretty sure you can use PDANET to tether the Droid at no extra cost.
<http://www.junefabrics.com/android/>, though I'm sure it must violate
the Verizon TOS somehow. Same deal for a jailbroken iPhone.

I have a Droid on Verizon's network, but not on Verizon proper. Right
now I'm on pay-as-you-go data, but soon I'll be on the $30/month
voice/messaging/data plan. Wi-Fi is so ubiquitous now, that I can get by
with the 50MB plus 60˘/MB overage. I really like how the Droid is
integrated with all the Google services like contacts, calendar, and Gmail.
