Howdy,
I just picked up a 6340i.
Is there anyway to set the phone so that it won't ROAM?
I'd prefer that the phone doesn't roam on its own unless I really need it,
then I can re-enable roaming.
Any ideas?

Why ? Are you on the Nation Plan ? You can force it to GSM only by placing a
GSM sim in it without the amps and tdma stuff. You could reprogram the IRDB
to only allow a local SID. You could pickup a GSM only phone and put your
6340's sim in it.

Re: 6340i, can I disable roaming?
I'm on the Cingular Prefered Nation Plan for Multi-Network (GAIT) handsets.
Basically, I just don't want to end up wondering into an area during a call
that starts charging me roaming charges.
I can't get a straight answer from one sales person to the next on whether
or not I can be charged roaming charges on this plan. So, if it is possible
to go pick up a signal that I'll get charged for, I'd prefer to hav eth
phone refuse that signal (connection, or whatever you call it).
Like, if the phone displays "Cingular Extended" do I pay roaming charges if
I make / receive a call?
I've seen Cingular Extended display on my phone while sitting in a chair at
a friends house (in north Houston), a couple minutes later I looked again
and the display showed Cingular (I hadn't moved from the chair).

You can be charged roaming that is the difference between Nation and
Prefered Nation.
Goto the Cingular web site and look at their maps for both plans and save a
copy for future billing problems.
My understanding is that you may or may not be charged for calls made with
the "Cingular Extend" message.
The difference is in Prefered network and Cingular Extended Network, in
other words not all of the extended network is Prefered.
So, if it is possible

Re: 6340i, can I disable roaming?
Remember the wording at the bottom of the map: It is not the location where
the call was made, but the tower that handled the call. If it says Cingular
Extend you will be charged roaming. Sometimes, you will be able to get them
reversed by having CS check the location the call was made. There is no way
to restrict the carrier that the 6340i picks up.
