I have a new Cingular Phone (Motorola V400 - GSM, GPRS capable), with a USB
data cable. I do not have the Connection kit, as I mostly use a Mac, and the
software is only Windows, but I do have the cable.
My previous cell phone was with Sprint, and I was able to use it to dial in
to my ISP, or use Sprint's network, using some codes that I found posted
somewhere. I have the Wireless Express option on my phone, although that was
not necessary with my Sprint phone, as I was dialing into my own ISP, it
just used minutes on my plan. I could also use a special code as the phone
number to get into Sprint network, which worked also - neither seemed to be
any faster than the other, and all I got billed for was the minutes used. I
was able to use my Windows laptop the same way, using the same settings, but
I use my Mac laptop a lot more.
Now, I want to do the same thing with my new phone. I see some references to
that posted here, but no details (at least in the postings I can see).
No problem with drivers, etc. - the Mac doesn't need them. When I connect
the cable to my laptop, it shows up fine as a 'Motorola V400 Modem' and I
can download and upload my address book, etc. using a shareware program (GSM
Remote X), so it appears to be communicating fine. (In GSM Remote, the modem
shows up as 'usbmodem19176') I even get 'USB Modem disconnected' message
when I unplug the phone.
When setting up the dial up options, I need to select from a long list of
modems, and several I have tried do not work, and I could make a career out
of selecting each one and trying it, especially since I am not sure that is
where the problem is. ;-)
What I need is either the type of modem to select to dial up my ISP, or, as
I think some have alluded to here, the access code and/or login ID/Password
to get on Cingular's network. When I try to connect from my laptop, I get
'Contacting PPP Server..' then, after a few seconds, a 'disconnecting.'
message, then a 'modem error' (no error code). I have seen references to
*99*# and variations, but is that the phone number? And what is the login id
and password to use?
I am in the San Francisco Bay area, if that makes a difference. I am very
proficient technically (Mac or Windows), so I don't need a step-by-step,
just the pertinent technical details (modem type, phone number, access
codes, etc.)
Thanks,
Griffin

Re: Using GSM Phone (V400) as modem with laptop
I was under the understanding that you used the GPRS for the data
transfer.
I guess you could call directly throug the phone but would that use
airtime?
Call 866-802-2919. Its Cingular's after hours tech help.
Should be able to get a "person" who knows something.
