My wife and I just signed up for Cingular's Family plan and both
received 6340i's. We're having trouble determining who's phone is
how's. Is there a way to have the phone display your name on the main
screen?
Thanks.

Rename one of the profiles with your names in each phone and then choose
that profile and customize it.

Re: Personalizing a 6340i
Right on! I did the same thing. I renamed "Outdoor" to my name, so that
it serves as ownership ID on the screen. In addition, because I am hard
of hearing, I have the volume boosted, and the spectrum set to amplify
high pitch sounds. Works great.

Change one of the profiles that are available on the phone. You can
change the name of any of them except the normal profile to any text
you like so you could make one of the profile names your name and on
your wife's phone you could make one of the profile's her name.

Just to point out one disadvantage of using profiles for this purpose.
You wouldn't be able to use "normal" (since it can't be renamed and
doesn't display anyway) so that would prevent the use of "timed"
profiles -- which revert to Normal at that time. That comes in quite
handy at times.
Some other options:
1) Stick a colored dot sticker on one above the speaker opening.
2) Get creative with an etching tool and some gold ink and make a really
personalized "emblem" above the speaker.
3) Or perhaps the best solution--Get a new faceplate for one. They ARE
available now. Hawk Electronics offers them locally but there are dozens
of designs on Ebay (do a search for "nokia 6340i faceplate"). I don't
think they "snap" on as easily as some phones--you have to have a torq
wrench--but I bet you could take it to your carrier store and they'd
swap it for you probably for free.

Here's a link to the directions for getting the faceplate off:
http://www.ringtonerfest.com/dcforum...mID1/9282.html
Uses a Torx T6 driver. Apparently getting the cover off the top antenna
section to get to the top screws is tricky if you've never done it
before.

*All* profiles have the ability to be timed. And what's the
disadvantage to not being able to use the normal profile? You have
four others you can customize and change the profile name.

Not a very easy choice. The 6310i does not have "Xpress on" covers as
do some of the other Nokia models. You have to use a torx 6
screwdriver to remove the face plate and also mess with some clips
that you could easily mess up unless you have done this a few times
before.

I assumed that when timed profiles expired it always reverted back to
the "normal" profile which wouldn't have a custom name hence loosing the
owner name benefit. However, a quick test shows that if a "non-normal"
profile was active (and displaying it's name) another profile can be
timed and when it expires the phone reverts back to the last selected
profile not necessarily to "normal". If another profile is active even
the "normal" profile can be timed (and actually displays "Normal" in
that case). Nice. So--objection withdrawn.

True but that doesn't make it any less desirable. Like I said I bet the
local carrier store would do it either free or for a very small fee if
he didn't want to or didn't have the torx screwdriver. Some of those
designs are quite nice.

Re: Personalizing a 6340i
I replaced the faceplate on my wife's phone for the same reason. It was
fairly simple. Remove the battery, pry off the upper back plate with a small
screwdriver by prying from the battery compartment edge, remove the screws
with the torx driver I bought at the same time as the faceplate, Reassemble.
Now my wife's phone is OSU scarlet. Go Bucks.
