I'm going to change providers and thought i might find the one that
had the most "bang for the buck". Since I am changing providers
thought that i would get all of what i think want... this time...
None of the sales people in any of the stores had the ability or
service to show me how i might read my email off my phone or even
connect my laptop to my phone to surf the net.
Today i found someone at Cingular who was helpful, he pressed whatever
he pressed and showed it to me and it said "connecting" we waited for
five minutes or so and nothing happened, he concluded that i would not
be able to connect to earthlink with just using the phone to check my
email..
I would like to sometimes check email with my phone and also to
connect to the web with my laptop. It would not take me long if I had
the service and add-ons to see if I would be pleased with doing just
that. But after I get it all and am not pleased it would be a pain to
return it all.... is anyone out there doing what I want to do????
Also, the sales person said that June 1st was the day that the new
phones come out in my area, 25 of them instead of just 2 for
nationwide service. Also that connection speed would be 56K as opposed
to 9.6 K or whatever he said the connection speed was now.... for web
service.
Any input would be appreciated.
thanks,

Re: Cingular and Earthlink???? Reading e-mail?
I can use my Samsung GSM phone to connect to the net (GPRS) and get my
earthlink mail. Go to Cingular's My
Wireless Window. Go to email on it and set up a POP account.

The warning is that using GPRS for this can become incredibly expensive if
you have some mail attachments. I'm set up to use CSD, and therefore
connections are billed to my minutes, and not by the data volume.
Essentially free on weekends and nights.

Circuit Switched Data-- using some combination of your cell phone and
provider network just as if it were a 9600 baud modem.

The point I was addressing has nothing to do with whether you can do it or
not-- of course it can be done. If you're not careful, though, you're
going to pay a half cent per kilobyte (!!!!) to do it. A megabyte of
attachments would cost 5 bucks. If you use CSD instead of GPRS, there's no
volume fee--you just pay for online minutes--so it's essentially free on
nights and weekends.

T-Mobile does not have free GPRS.

It must have been turned back on, because I use it everyday, and also use
CSD exclusively, because I am not willing to pay the high rates for the
marginally faster speeds of GPRS. If the would give us unlimited for a low
flat rate like T-Mobile, I could justify using it over CSD since it is a bit
faster and keeps the line clear.

Ah, no it wasn't. I just used CSD 5 minutes ago!

I'am using CSD too, I think what was turned off was an option on your
account, maybe a call to Customer service and you can get it turned on.
