If I sign up for a GAIT plan, is there any reason I could not take the SIM
card from the GAIT phone and use it in another GSM-only Cingular handset? I
travel in some rural areas that require TDMA/Analog for good coverage, but I
mostly live in a pretty good GSM region at home / office. I'd like to keep
the GAIT phone for travel (let's face it, its pretty big & clunky) and buy a
    GSM-only for local use.

    Any experience with this?

    Thanks!

In theory it should work. But Hawk CS (Cingular reseller) is reporting
problems doing that. It appears to only be working ONE way, i.e. the
sim from a Nokia 6340i can be put in a GSM-only phone and it works fine
BUT some GSM-only data is downloaded with the next IRDB download that is
preventing the card from working with the 6340i when it is put back in
it. He didn't go into details as to whether the phone would work at all
or just not on GSM or if they could fix it without a new card. I was
considering getting a PDA/phone and using that in town but now I'm not
sure I want to risk it. Does anyone have any details on this problem?

Have a GAIT plan "Nation" with a 6340i the sim works fine in a unlocked
T-mobile 8290. It roams on the AT&T GSM network here in Alabama, no Cingular
GSM here no problems. I don't do it a lot because the GSM coverage here is
better with T-mobile but neither is good as TDMA/CDMA.

    No.

Yes. 6340i to 6590i regularly. Works perfectly so far.

It works in the reverse, just fine, I moved my sim card from my crappy 3395
phone to my 40 dollar e-bay special 6340i and everything works great, no
analog, but since cingular doesn't offer GAIT in Seattle, I don't care. I
    just like the phone better.

Have you had any trouble moving it BACK to the 6340i? I was told they
were having some problems once a GSM database downloaded.

Does Cingular download anything to their GSM SIMs on a regular basis?
Back when I had Cingular TDMA it took an act of Congress just to
convince them to push an OTA IRDB update! ;-)

I've been a T-Mo customer for 2-1/2 years and only last month did I
get my first SIM update. Now my SIM finally IDs itself as "T-Mobile"
    instead of "Voicestream!"

Verizon's *228 update is great wish others would provide updates and ESN
swaps via a web or automated phone request. Should reduce roaming charges
for them and us. As for the ESN swaps they may reduce errors and call backs
with a automated system. I've read about ATTW's automated system but my
prepaid phone is not included (callplus).
