In the process of evaluating a move to Cingular from ATT, I visited a local
retail store to ask a few questions. One question I had was whether or not
I could change plans during the contract period, for example, if I start
with a GSM plan, can I change to a GAIT plan if the coverage is problematic
for me. (Naturally, I would need to get a GAIT phone to do this) I also
asked if I could move from GAIT to GSM if I wanted to. Essentially, the
answer was that I can move from plan to plan within the "family" I select
(ie Nation GSM or Nation GAIT), but not between families.

Is this true? I know with ATT & Verizon, I could pretty much change to any
plan I wanted to at any time. In fact a few years ago, I changed from a
National 1-rate plan at Verizon to a local minimal-cost plan with no
    trouble. Comments?

Also, I've seen references in a couple of places now that would indicate
that if I provided my own handset (ie buy a phone off of eBay or something)
I could get the Cingular plans without a minimum contract. Is this true?
It would be nice, but kind of hard to believe. Those folks selling phones
on eBay sure seem to push this pretty hard, though. I don't have a problem
with a 1 year contract for me, but I would like to be able to add a 2nd
"family" line that I may not need for a whole year.

Sorry if I'm annoying anyone with this, and thanks in advance for your
    knowledge!

It didn't used to be. Call Cingular and ask. You know, you visited a
local retail store; was it a Cingular store, or was it a reseller?
Either way, those folks aren't always that bright.
