They went to GSM simply to be able make a small change in the equipment rack
for this TDMA to GSM (TDMA variant) change. No changes needed to the
antennas, power supplies, etc. The cheapest bang for the buck. WCDMA is
being discussed as an overlay within 6-8 years to increase channel capacity
    and data rates.

    It was a typo. It's 100M (million.)

    A typo. S/B 100,000,000 not 100,000.

    Small change?! That's a joke -- right?!

AT&T and Cingular migrated to GSM because it was the best technical path, as
white papers from both carriers make clear.

No citation? I didn't think so.

Verizon and Cingular are the two major carriers in my area. Cingular GSM

You guys are brainwashed that GSM is the best thing since sliced bread.
    Cingular's 850 overlay systems around the country leave much to be desired;
that's why I force my 6340i back to TDMA/AMPS by refusing the CELL BARR.

GSM was only mandated in the EU. Elsewhere it was adopted and I'm
guessing it was for compatibility's sake.

This is not a GSM vs. CDMA pissing match. The original article
announced that there are now around one billion GSM subscribers
world-wide. You can argue which is better til the cows come home the
fact remains that there are now around one billion GSM subscribers.
Instead of people making these diversions around the topic they should
deal with the subject at hand. If it disappoints you that there are
that many GSM subscribers and there aren't that many CDMA subscribers
    just deal with it!

Which has little to do with the original subject of this thread.
Funny how people can make a war out of a simple statement of fact.

There was no compatibility benefit when Cingular and ATTWS decided to switch
to GSM. They did so because they felt it was the best technical path to
    follow.

When you have NO GSM signal and no AMPS, you are SOL.

True, but I usually have GSM signal, so it's not a big problem.

Well, since you like to use letters I say BFD that you're SOL with no
AMPS. The subject of this thread doesn't have a damn thing to do with
it. The subject which many people have chosen to ignore is that GSM
has one billion subscribers. If you can't discuss the topic at hand I
guess the only thing to do is throw up a smokescreen and try to divert
the topic away from what it was so you can flog your already dying
    horse.
