I live in Central New Jersey and have been a Verizon customer for
years. Prior to that, I used the former Comcast Cellular One which is
now part of Cingular Wireless, and thought the service was OK, but not
as good as Verizon. How good is Cingular vs. Verizon in NJ and NYC
areas? The costs are about the same and Verizon call quality has been
declining in NJ recently, although most of the time the call quality
    is OK.

I can answer this one since we have in my household 1 Nextel phone, 2
Cingular phones (both gait phones) and 1 Verizon phone.

In Central NJ (I live in Toms River), I find that Cingular has the best
overall coverage, not by a lot, but they surely do. If you were to use
your phone basically in Central NJ, then Cingular is the way to go.
That is using the GAIT phones, which pick up a GSM and TDMA signal.
There might be different results if you get just a GSM phone.

If you go outside of Central NJ, then Verizon has every other carrier
    beat in coverage and service.

I don't use the Nextel phone, but service for them is OK in Central NJ.
I wouldn't want to be anywhere else and stuck on the road with this
phone, I have no confidence in it's ability to always have a signal.

Overall, Verizon gets the nod, and if you feel that your call quality is
declining, try another phone before giving up on the network. I'm the
one in my household who uses the Verizon phone, and travel all over the
country and service works everywhere. If I lived, worked, and hardly
ever left Ocean County, I'd be happy with Cingular.

I live in Middlesex County had Comcast Cellular One (later Cingular)
from 1995 - 2002. They were great in the beginning but when they went
with the Cingular name, quality of customer service dropped (as an
example, you'd often get your call to customer service ported to
Florida, where they couldn't access your accounts!). The second decline
was when Cingular started pumping all their funds into the GSM system
and ignored the TDMA side. I switched to Verizon Wireless in 2002 and
never looked back. The one or two calls to customer service have been
great and I don't even worry that a call won't go through on Verizon,
whereas it was hit and miss on Cingular.

Cingular never worked great in my house. With Verizon, I have no problems.
