Moto v400. My wife has the s307, and while it is a great phone, it is a
little slack in the feature department. Notably, the lack of MMS capability.
I also do not like the menu setup on the s307, but of course that is just a
    matter of opinion.

Consider also an unlocked Sony Ericsson Z600.

Go with the V400. The S307 is fine, but has slightly shorter talk time and a
lower rating from users. The V400 is a world phone, which may prove useful
    to you in the future.

For a dual band clamshell, the Samsung SGH-X426/X427 is better than the
S307, as well as less expensive.

Not a lot of choice in clamshell style phones with decent talk time. Aren't
    there any non-color phones anymore?

The SE Z600 doesn't sound like a good choice for Cingular since it doesn't
    cover the 850 band.

This is true. Even in areas where Cingular is 1900 Mhz only now, after the
merger they may have the more desirable 800 Mhz spectrum in many areas, i.e.
the western region. For U.S. phones you want 850/1900, for world phones you
want quad band. I know that NEC and Motorola have quad band phones, not sure
about other carriers, but there are a lot of dual band U.S. phones.

While 850 coverage would be nice to have, I haven't found the lack of it to be
a problem in any of the (many) areas I go. I personally think the Z600
(Bluetooth, IR, etc.) blows away the V400, and would rather have the better
phone than the extra band. As always, YMMV.

You can see recommended handsets at http://nordicgroup.us/ssub/handset.htm.

GSM on Cingular: Nokia 6340i (GAIT), Motorola V400,Samsung S307.

As others have pointed out, it's important that you obtain a dual-band or
quad band phone, since Cingular is going from 800 Mhz TDMA to 800/850 Mhz
GSM in many areas. In the past, when I had Cingular in the west, I'd roam
onto T-Mobile in other areas, but this was not included in my calling plan.
Even in the western region, which is all 1900 Mhz at this juncture, after
the merger there will be 800/850 Mhz GSM from AT&T's spectrum (which should
contribute greatly to solving the GSM coverage issues out here).
