My shiny new Motorola V400 GSM phone persists in showing the wrong time -
it's seven minutes later than the actual time. There's no way to set the
time manually, the phone gets the time from the network. The various
Cingular people I've talked to have no answer. Does anyone here know what's
    going on?

I don't remember GSM providing the time over the net.
I thought the phones had to be set manually or synched with a synch
    cable/programmer?

Most, if not all GSM towers send out a time/date signal that most GSM
handsets are capable of receiving from

The V400 is basically the same as my V300, so go to the Menu item "Initial
Setup" and change the "Date & Time" to "Manual" from "Automatic", then you
can set the info from the keypad.

It depends on which system you are on whether NITZ is present. I know
it's present on the west coast and in the NYC metro area.

Not true. Unlike CDMA systems which require exact time sync GSM
systems do not require it though many GSM systems do have NITZ. And
not all GSM handsets are capable of automatic time/date update.

Nope - the only option I have under Initial Setting - Date and Time is to
turn Auto Update on or off. There appears to be no way to set the time
    manually at all.

I didn't say all, I said most to both cases. I didn't say required, I just
said most have it. Boy you sure do carry a grudge. this is kinda fun <wink>.

OK, let's have some fun. What is *your* definition of most? Just
California and New York or California, New York and Washington? Most
usually implies the majority. Do you know in fact that the majority
of cingular's GSM and TDMA systems have NITZ implemented or is it just
    your speculation.

No, most doesn't imply majority, it MEANS majority, or greatest in number.
Yes I do know for a fact that the majority, or most of Cingular's GSM
systems have NITZ active on them. I tend to speak the English language. I am
sorry you don't understand it. ROFL. This is fun <wink>.

    It does appear that way

    Uhhh.. ok..

Yep, that works (I had turned AutoUpdate off before but didn't see the
additional options.) and following your instructions I can reset my clock to
the correct time. However, as soon as I turn AutoUpdate back on the time
changes right back to 8 minutes fast.

The only conclusion I can think of is that Cingular, either accidentally or
deliberately, is broadcasting the wrong time.

    Oldest joke in the world:

I went to the doctor and said "Doc, it hurts when I do this." The
Doctor said "then don't do that..."

DON'T turn auto-update back on! The phone clock is probably accurate
to a few seconds a month, so you'll have upgraded phones by the time
it's off by a few minutes!

    > The only conclusion I can think of is that Cingular, either accidentally or
    > deliberately, is broadcasting the wrong time.

Bingo- give that man a cigar!

I'll guess it's accidental- unless you think it's a dirty trick to
bill you for 8 minutes of airtime each night when you THINK it's a 9pm
free nights call, but it's really only 8:52! ;-)

The time set feature is just a convenience. It's like those
auto-timeset VCRs that get a time signal from the local PBS station.
It's only as accurate as the guy who punched the time in the computer
    at the central office...
