What are they for? Do most people need them?

How often do you whip out your cell phone to take a picture?

Are they just digital cameras where you store your shots and then
download them to your system? How much can they typically store?

Are the pictures send from the phone to another recipient's phone? If
so how is that charged and what does the recipient do with them?

When I get a new plan and phone in a couple of months, should I get a
    camera phone?

Mainly novelty, but I guess they could come in handy in a pinch for pictures
of a wreck or some other legal matter. See response to following question
    for another possibility.

I think once, and just because my 2 year old was doing something really
cute, and I just wanted a picture, no matter how poor the quality.

Yes. The amount and file type varies by phone depending on memory amount. My
particular phone has 2MB memory to store files in. That doesn't sound like
much, but it is more than enough to store a few pictures in until you can
transfer them to PC. Due to the low quality, the file size of the pictures
is very small. I have about 17 pictures in mine right now and plenty of
space left. Most weren't taken with the phone though. They were pictures I
transfered to the phone for use as picture caller-id, backgrounds, etc.

If recipient is also on Cingular, you use an "MMS" message. They are at 25
cents each or included with some packages. Otherwise you could also email
them if your phone supports it for either 1 cent per KB or subscribe to a
plan that includes some (or even unlimited) data amounts. I'm not sure what
you mean by "what does the recipient do with them?"

Ultimately, of course, that's up to you. With increased privacy concerns
many work places and security are banning them. Even with the newer camera
phones, the quality still puts them at a "good for emergency" or "gotta have
a pic of that" level in my opinion. A cheapo stand alone digital camera
still takes better pics than camera phones.

That's pretty much my view of it. I bought my T616 because of other features
(bluetooth and color screen being two of the biggest). It just happens to
have a camera in it. <wink> I view it basically as a novelty. But like you
said, it will be nice to have if by chance I ever need it.

I for one won't ever buy a phone without a camera in it. The pictures you
take with those phones are not for photo albums, but they are picture
notes: more like mental notes, designes on furniture pieces, product
labels, landscaping ideas (when you drive by a nicely landscaped house),
    anything really...

it's one of those things that you don't know what you are missing until
you start using it. Every phone out there lets you email the pictures
somewhere. If you email them to [email protected] they end up in your
myPhoneFiles account and you can then send them to any other phone out
    there.

Also get a phone that can use real voice ringers. Motorola V400 is the
best. Then use the Voicetones Studio app from MyPhoneFiles.com to turn
your music collection into real voice ringtones.
