I've been an AT&T cellular subscriber for about 3 1/2 years now. I came very
close to dumping the service at one point almost 2 years ago. Instead, I stayed
with AT&T and switched to GSM service, which gave me improved coverage and call
clarity. I was thinking again recently about trying out a different service,
but I've noticed that since AT&T and Cingular started merging networks (since
the Cingular buyout) that my coverage has gotten steadily (although somewhat
slowly) better in areas where it struggled before. I'm wondering if anyone
knows how much better the service is supposed to get, and at what point the
merging of cell sites, etc...will be finished. A salesperson at the AT&T store
told me that they were expecting everything to be complete by the end of
January, 2005 but that there was no "official" word from the company. I'm also
curiours as to wether or not AT&T wireless will continue to exist or if at some
point next year it will just be rolled into Cingular. It'd be nice to see the
company operating under one name with improved coverage and a greater selection
of plans.

ATTWS will be rolled into Cingular within 6 months.
ATTWS already has free roaming on Cingular, but not vice versa.
I expect the network merge to be completed sometime between the end of this
year and the middle of next year.

Seattle market has had free roaming on ATT network since I have had
a Cingular phone (four years). FYI

Actually, in the Nj area I am starting to see the effects of the tower
intigration from the at&t buy out. I live in Rockaway where building
penetration was practicly non existant. Scince last week I am getting signal
in buildings. When I dial 611 I hear the lovely message welcome to at&t
wireless although my sid shows Cingular. When I leave the building and dial
611 It's back to "welcome to Cingular wireless". This gives me hope!>

Indeed, Cingular has had roaming on ATTWS for some time _in certain markets_
-- I was referring to _all_ markets, which hasn't yet happened AFAIK.
