In the past few weeks I have started to have many more problems with Verizon
in Milwaukee and Wisconsin in general. First, in the beginning of the summer
I moved a mile down the road and went from having a full signal in my
apartment to having almost none. I was still able to use my phone without
too many problems. But in the last couple weeks I have had a few people say
I was cutting out and have dropped a couple calls. Maybe it is because I
have had to shut the windows with the colder weather? Also, I am originally
from Green Bay and I am there quite a bit and that is also not a very strong
Verizon market, especially my parents house.

Second, in the past week I had a friend call me 4 times in an hour or so
span, but my phone only rang once. I had a couple friends tell me that they
couldn't leave voice mails because it said the network was busy or something
to that effect. Verizon also switched the voice mail system here a few weeks
back and ever since then there has been a number of times where I will dial
my voice mail and it will say I don't have access to the network and so I
have to hang up and dial again.

I have always been a big Verizon fan and have gotten my family and a few
friends to sign up with Verizon, but I have started to wonder if I should
change carriers. I know that Wisconsin isn't one of Verizon's strongest
markets since it is the 1900 mhz markets. My roommate also had Verizon when
we moved into our apartment, but he couldn't even use his phone (I guess my
phone got better reception than his) so he switched to Cingular and it has
worked very well for him. I am not in contract and with the merger I am
    contemplating moving myself.

So my question for the group is how is Cingular in Wisconsin? From my
roommate's experience it seems to be good in Milwaukee. I'm a little
concerned about Green Bay since there is no Cingular native coverage, only
AT&T and I'm not sure how AT&T GSM is in that area. I also travel to
Minneapolis a few times a year so anyone that has experience with Cingular
or AT&T there would be great too. I'm hesitant to switch because overall my
experience with Verizon has been very good, but if these problems persist
I'm not sure I will have any choice. Thank you.

I regularly drive between Kenosha and Green Bay and have had good
coverage with Cingular the whole way, including stops in Milwaukee,
    Cedarburg, Port Washington, Sheboygan, Manitowoc.

Does Kenosha still have a large population of Pacer cars?

Anybody use Cingular around the Green Lake area. The map shows service right up to the edge of the county. I would love to switch to GSM but I spend to much time up there not to have service.

Which is now "native Cingular" coverage, since AT&T towers are now
    Cingular towers.

Good point!! I know a couple people who have used AT&T in that area and
have had a few problems, but they were on TDMA and not GSM. That is what I
meant when I was concerned about it being native AT&T and not Cingular. Is
    AT&T GSM good quality overall?

Quibble: ATTWS will be native Cingular coverage when the networks are
integrated. For now ATTWS is free roaming coverage. The difference is that
now a Cingular phone won't roam on ATTWS if there's a "usable" Cingular
signal, even if the Cingular signal is marginal and the ATTWS signal is
    better.

Here is question that relates to this last comment. Say I start driving in
Milwaukee where I would be using Cingular towers and drive up to Green Bay
where there is no Cingular, but AT&T. Would I be able to hold a call the
whole way or would the call drop when I get to the edge of the Cingular
tower's coverage and needs to switch to AT&T towers? Basically, if you
start in your call in a Cingular area, will the call hold if you move into a
AT&T area? I know this would only be an issue until the networks are
    integrated.

I have switched between Cingular and ATT towers
during calls with no ill effect.

    (Seattle market, GSM)

I don't know if Cingular has the necessary technology for handover (handoff)
    between Cingular and ATTWS networks.

    OK Bernard,

You have piqued my interest. How do you know that you switched from a Cingular
to an AT&T tower site. How do you know you even switched? How do you know that
you didn't switch to a different sector on the same site?

My phone would say "cingular" I would start a phone call,
as I looked at the phone to hit "end" it said "ATT". I had just
gotten the phone and my service, so I was concerned that
I would be stuck with roaming charges, so I called 611 and
was told I would not pay roaming. I had one of the nokia
phones that had the lcd display that I had to look at to turn
    it off.

That is how I knew. I never would have seen it with my
current phone, since I just close it to end the call.
