Re: 2-line phones
I do get a 15% discount on a nation plan. I was just trying to keep from
having to carry two phones.

You need to pay attention to what he asked. He specifically asked for
a solution *not* carry two phones!

If you have a data line, you can call customer service and ask them
what it is.
What would this accomplish?

But nobody came up with a reasonable 1 phone solution.

It sounds like you have CSD (Circuit Switched Data) on your account.
Call them and them to see if you have it, then ask them to remove it.
In the billing system, when you provision an account for CSD, you
actually have to pick a 2nd data number (it's kinda automated though).
However, after provisioning, I haven't been able to find (see) the
number. When this number is called, exactly what you say happens:
Phone will ring with an alternate ring (check ur options) and it
displays: must be answered with data device, i.e., PC." Speaking of
ringing options, for now, you can go into your handset options and set
it for "no ring" or silent on data calls.

That's why I caveated it. Some in ths group have talked about hanging
their laptop off the phone and calling it from a landline on the data
number, thus providing a reverse dialup internet connection from the
phone.
I'm sure someone could come up with a useful reason for doing this,
but otherwise I think we've answered the original question...

Re: 2-line phones
I have two numbers (NAMS) in my handset although both cannot be "active"
simultaneously. When at work, I enable my work number. At other times I
enable my personal number. The phone responds only to the "enabled" number
and disregards the other. Calls to the "non-enabled" number go unanswered
or go to voice mail. Been doing this for years.

Depends on the phone, but it's usually in the menus.

He didn't say if he wanted to keep his home phone or just have two numbers.
I'd suggest looking at a TELCO 'granny' phone. The landline companies in the
past had a limited use landline that was limited in the number of out-dials,
not incoming. It would be interesting to order one, put it on call
forwarding to your cell and forget about it except for maybe $12/mon fee.

if you did do this forwarding idea, when you call people back on 'business' you could dial *67 to block your cell #
