Who knows? I'd expect the V180 to be similar to the V220.

I've heard of EDGE but don't know anything about it - what's the average top
speed? 1xEV-DO is supposedly about 350-500Kbps.

    What about it?

It's not being sold yet by Motorola. The Samsung A690 has been out for a while
and is in Verizon Wireless stores.

Yes, but at least by what I have read, the GSM functionality is no good
in the United States. Seems to me you are still better off renting a
phone and buying a SIM when you travel if you are going to do any
    significant communication.

If you were going to do any significant amount of communication
renting a phone would be a poor move since the price of rental would
likely be most of the cost of actually buying an older or less feature
    filled phone.

You are absolutely right. The A690 is meant to be purchased by people who
travel internationally. 850/1900 CDMA for the USA and 900/1800 GSM for Europe
    and abroad. No AMPS, AFAIK.

If you are a regular business traveller, sure, but then, I would have a
world phone [unlocked] with Cingular and not a hybrid with Verizon.
Still, an infrequent trip to Europe as an example would be well worth
just renting a phone and going with a locally purchased SIM.

And GSM in the A690 is ONLY for international usage. It does not support
the North American GSM frequencies. GSM only at 900/1800 MHz. No roaming
    on Cingular/AT&T.

But it will work/roam in North America on VZW, Sprint, Alltel and other CDMA
    carriers.
Most GSM phones sold in North America will not roam internationaly.
There are of course quad band international usage GSM phones available.

You specifically need a "world phone" which runs on all four bands. I don't
know that "most" is accurate - "many", for sure...

Not if you're familliar with what companies charge to rent phones.
It's always better to buy a phone even a second-hand one than to rent
    a phone.

And tri-band "world" phones, lots of them.
