cingular is getting rid of all their tech people and going to a send the
phone back repair and warranty service the local tech guy here was let go
    after ten years of service.

All service related issues are handled via Customer Service leading to the
Warranty exchange or lockline by telephone. We have a nice "hotline" phone
booth in the store for customers who come in for these kind of problems.
Cingular is doing this for a reason. It is official protocol now.

If I'm spending time troubleshooting your phone I can't sell other people
phones. I work on commission and my kids don't get new shoes, clothes,
dinner, and my ex doesn't get the child support.

If I've sold you the phone I'm happy to help you get the help you need. But
we have people who come in our stores who, buy their phones of the internet,
who can't even turn there phones on and want us to show them how to use
them. I will fully listen to the customer and if I can help quickly, or sell
them some accessories, I'm happy to assist.

Again. Cingular protocol is to call CS and have them troubleshoot the phone.
    Salesmen sell service for Cingular.

I suppose I wasn't thinking of an official Cingular webpage, and I can
certainly understand about the confusion factor. I assume anyone could
have a webpage about it.... even yours. I've talked to Customer
Care about ENS... er... 'skuze me... I tried to talk to them about ENS,
and the only responce I got sounded like a room full of crickets. If I
had the time I could ring through enough times to eventually get that
one rep that had a high geek quotient....

A better bet is to trump up a technical problem and ask to be put through to
    Technical Support.

"There's a bad echo suppressor I want to report" usually does it. And
who hasn't heard a bit of echo in the last couple of days?

Some independent Cingular dealers do. And do minor repairs if the
    phone is out of warranty.

Ah HA! Sooo, you do have a devious mind....!

Okay, lessee... how 'bout "I've been told ENS offers equal access to two
different networks, so how much longer will I have to keep listening to
two different people at the same time?"

We have an independent store about a mile away and that's where we send the
folks who don't want to go through warranty exchange. 90 % of the time there
back within an hour when they find out just how much it will cost to get
their phone repaired. They will troubleshoot the phone for free though.

We'll even do water damage repair for free if a) the phone was bought
from us, b) the battery was removed immediately, c) it was clean fresh
(not salt) water, d) it wasn't too long ago and e) there are no
guarantees, going in, that we can fix the phone or that, if we DO fix
    it, it will keep working.

IOW we do our best for our customers.

Malfunction in the carrier's echo suppressors.
