Is there an Outage in the Southeast? Specifically, Huntsville/Decatur
    Alabama?

My v600 has NO signal at all, and my family's v400's all show a signal but
cannot make any calls. Yes, our bill is paid!

Can't find anything online to indicate that it it more than my problem, and
since we no longer have a landline... can't call customer service to check!

    Anybody out there w/same issue??

    [email protected]

I've heard this same general question from several people, and it seems
like Cingular had a tummy ache sometime yesterday.

Yeah we had a similar hiccup in service yesterday for about 2 hours.

Made for a very fun evening in the store.

Looks like the outage is being discussed on broadbandreports.com

The outage was nationwide. It was caused by a crash on the server or
servers that houses the HLR(Home Location Register) database. Apparently
this database hold everything needed to route, identify customers, and
handle call on Cingular's network. Other than that, I don't know much
about it what all it does other than that fact that nothing works when
    it goes down.

    Enjoy

If this is true, a single point of failure such as this is inexcusable for a
company as large as Cingular with a nationwide network. I can't believe
there wasn't some kind of redundancy.

Yes, they hold things which authenticate you with the network, and track
where you are. Your profile such as what features you have are also
    retrieved from there.

HLRs are usually highly fault tolerant machines. It is rare for them to
go down, and when they do, it usually is a subset of the subscribers
    that are without service.

I work tier2 tech support for cingular and yes we had outtages..reason 2 things the HLR's went out because the eng. were trying to port all att number to us. it aint happeing..another thing and this is the best one. incorrect programming on the LRN woo hoo....and it's going to be like that constantly..an no I don't like working for cingular. that's why im getting on all the boards I can to get peeps away from cingular. period. pretty soon your going to be like the peeps in cali for the last 2weeks. where there phones say unreg sim. yes the only fix for that is to do a hard shock which means to leave power on the phone and take the batt. out that is the only fix for that......the net. engineers don't know why it's doing that...and with all the outtages well get this there blamming it on the blue network...oh that's the other thing there is no 1 network w/cingular after the att/cing. merger and were telling the peeps that it;'s all 1 network it's not..just find a att phone put it next to a cing phone and i'll bet money cing phone has more signal. and it's going to stay like that. so when u call in ask a rep am I on the blue network or orange. they will tell u and I quote" sir/maam we only have one network orange." so just to let u know when u hear about a employee who snapped think of this post <evil laugh>
Yes I work for cingular....and cingular is about to find out what the meaning of pain is!!!!!!!!!

    Re: Outage??

Hey xdog, was the outage from Friday night until Saturday morning? I
was having an issue. I am an orange cust, but I was on the t-mob
network. Friday - Sundaym and noticed on my motorola, I had no signal.
On my Samsung, I had signal, but I was not registered. I called
customer support, and they told be it was an equipment problem.

I told them fine that replace my 2 4 day old phones with new ones if you
think it is equipment. They did not like that. I pushed harder, and
got it elevated to tier 2 or 3, they submitted a ticket etc.... I got
a text message monday that says my issue was closed. Was that related
    to the HLR?

If I remember the conversation correctly, it was a problem with the
database that caused the network to crash and that problem had already
replicated to the backup units. Keep in mind that I got this from a
friend who knows one of the engineers who worked on the problem so by
all means I might not have all the facts, and I certainly don't know
much about the technology myself. I just thought I might pass on what
    little I do know.

Well, I'm not xdog, but the Cing fella I had breakfast with this morning
says that can happen when a handset fails to auth - it goes looking for
another network to auth on, and until it finds one, you won't have a
signal indication on the handset. So, yes, it sounds like it was an
indirect issue related to the HLR hiccup.

And, according to my breakfast bud, the HLR itself didn't fail, per se,
it started with a facility failure to the one HLR pair, but the other
side was intensively trying to sync a new 'blue' database, and the
additional instant load caused things to get scrozzled pretty badly.
Sounds like the HLR software designers have more work to do, like
deciding what's more important, handling production traffic or syncing a
database. Does the term 'shedding' mean anything to these people? One
    wonders.
