When AT&T originally spun of ATTWS, they had a proviso in the agreement that
ATTWS had to stop using the AT&T trademarks and logos in the event they
merged.
Cingular did not, and could not, buy AT&T's logo. I believe that they get
to use if for 6 months after the merger date, as they wean ATTWS customers
to their network, after which it reverts back to AT&T.

Just the name reverts back. April 23.

This response does not explain why Sprint is selling service to ATT Mobile?
WASSUP with that?

They think they'll make money doing so.

So you're asking why Cingular would allow AT&T to partner with Sprint?
Well uhm, the same answer applies. What basis would they have for NOT
allowing it? It's solely AT&T's decision who they partner with, and
they are not bound to resell through Cingular.

Re: "Sprint Sells Service To AT&T Mobile"
The wireless business is profitable. ATT has a respected brand name. ATT
can resell Sprint service under the ATT brand and make a lot of money
with out building one single tower. Beautiful! Note the ATT entity that
does this is NOT the former ATT Wireless which was purchased by
Cingular.

I don't follow you--the name, but not the logo, reverts back?
I did read a press release that AT&T issued, saying emphatically that they
would be back in the wireless business "the day after" they got their name
back. So I presume that means we should expect an advertising blitz on
April 24.
They said that they would offer their own billing (and, presumably, roaming
agreements) and their own customer service. The term of their agreement
with Sprint has an initial period of 5 years.
This is much better for AT&T than trying to build a new wireless network
from scratch. This way, they hit the ground running. It remains to be seen
whether they will use that first 5 years to construct a network of their
own, slowly weaning customers off Sprint towers as new AT&T towers go up. I
suspect they will remain a virtual carrier, and let Sprint worry about
expanding and maintaining the network. Who knows, AT&T may be setting their
sights on a new generation of phones. Satellite, like OnStar, maybe??? Who
knows?

Simple. AT&T wants to resume offering wireless service to their business
customers, to remain a "full service" communications company.
They decided to buy network services from Sprint, rather than build their
own network (assuming that they could even purchase licenses in enough
cities). Sprint has excess capacity, and AT&T has potential new users, so
it was a good deal for both.
And AT&T does not have to worry about maintaining dual TDMA / GSM network.
They shed that problem when they originally spun off ATTWS. Now it is
Cingular's problem.
AT&T starts our fresh, with a working network already in place. They
probably already have phones waiting in warehouses to be sent to their new
customers. And they already have billing equipment and customer service
personnel, so all they have to do is switch everything on, and they'll be a
national wireless carrier instantly.
That is how MCI and Sprint originally started--they had limited network
facilities initially, and they bought service from AT&T to connect their
customers with places that they could not connect with themselves. The FCC
ordered AT&T to let them resell. In time, they built their own networks out
fully.
Maybe AT&T is playing the same game now, with wireless??

He may be confused about the spin-off.
AT&T (the long distance company) started the AT&T Wireless company, and then
sold it. As part of the deal, the new owners were allowed to continue using
the AT&T name, trademarks and logos. But it was a completely separate
company from AT&T.
When this new company sold out ("merged") with Cingular, it had absolutely
nothing to do with the AT&T (Long Distance) company. Cingular may use the
name and trademarks for only 6 months, while they complete the transition,
then they revert back to their original owner: AT&T.
So, when the (original) AT&T reenters the wireless market, they will again
use their own name--something they were not able to do previously, because
they were licensing their name to ATTWS.
Are you confused yet?

And they will re-enter the market as AT&T Mobile Systems and not as AT&T
Wireless.

a) Satellite phones are ridiculously expensive and don't work inside buildings,
so the likelihood that ATTWS gets into that industry segment will be pretty
small. They won't be able to sell very many.
b) OnStar is not a satellite phone service.

They have been advertising a mobile phone service that works all across the
country. Could it be anything other than a satellite-based service?

Have they officially announced the name?
It makes sense to put a bit of distance between themselves and AT&T
Wireless.
