No it's not. It's an AMPS based system.

Duh. It's Verizon. go checkout www.onstar.com

Duh, no it's not. As usual your reading comprehension is quite deficient.
They have a marketing agreement. Onstar works in places where Verizon has
ZERO coverage.
You need to quit trying to see things that aren't there.

If it was a pure satellite service, they wouldn't be advertising a Verizon
Wireless promo on the onstar.com homepage. My understanding is that satellite
may sometimes be involved -- but the service also depends largely on agreements
with a number of different cellular networks (many, not just one, which is why
they can advertise the kind of coverage they advertise).

And Verizon Wireless has no AMPS?
In fact, my Sprint phone roams analog on Verizon in spots up north of here
where Sprint doesn't have native coverage, and I used to have a Verizon phone
and had to force it to analog at my house because my house is just outside VZW
digital coverage.
Verizon isn't EXPANDING analog coverage, but they most definitely HAVE analog
coverage.
And OnStar is finally starting to provide digital phones with their service.

What part of "Onstar has agreements with several cellular carriers" are you
failing to comprehend?
You can't work with just one carrier and guarantee nationwide coverage. Even
the biggest carriers don't have comprehensive coverage.

I think the satellites are used for GPS, not communication.

Many people are confused about Onstar. Satellites are involved, for the
GPS portion of the product, and people think that you get satellite phone
service.
The fact that Onstar works in some areas that normal cell phones don't has
a lot to do with the fact it still supports analog, and a builtin phone
with a car battery behind it can give it coverage in areas the little
battery in a GSM only phone can't helps.
I would think that Satellite service would be a nice feature for really
out in the boonies would be useful. As a followup so you don't pay
$1/minute. I don't know if they have that as a plan for whenever AMPS
starts to go away, if and when it does.

No, The AT&T Corporation does not own any wireless spectrum. They cannot
construct any of their own towers. They have "hinted" that they might sign
their agreement with "other" carriers, but the most likely "other" carrier
was Nextel, and that will soon be a part of Sprint anyway.

They are advertising? Please provide a reference, I'd like to read it.
Yes, AT&T can supply a service that works "all across the country", just
like Qwest Wireless is now. Their "Cross Country" plan means you can use
all of the Sprint network and all of their roaming partners, which covers
possibly the largest total area of all carriers.

Again reading comprehension comes into play. I was making the point that
Onstar is not a Verizon only service provider you snot licking moron. Now go
take your seat on the back of the short bus and shut up. Let the grown ups
talk.

Nope. And given the new model year cycles. an '03 Escalade could conceivably
have been bought in late summer of '02. I'm pretty sure the OnStar CDMA push
only started in the last 12 to 18 months.
