Several months ago, I began getting a call from a fax machine at all hours
of the day & night. I tried calling it back but I always get a busy signal.
I tried looking up the phone number in reverse directories and it comes up
empty. I called Cingular and the rep told me there was some sort of an
internal glitch, and he did something with a "provision" and the calls
    stopped.

Yesterday the calls started again (from the same number), and I called
Cingular and this time the rep told me it has nothing to do with internal
glitches -- he said it's from an Internet company and he could not tell me
the name. He said I should go look up their name at www.searchbug.com by
searching their number. I went there its free service could not find the
owner of the number, but it said it can find unlisted numbers for $15.

I asked Cingular if they can simply block a number, and they said no. Is
that true? What must do to have whoever-it-is stop calling me? Their number
    is 619-286-1466.

Has anyone had something like this happen to them?

    Help!

When I get called relentlessly by a fax machine I forward the call to a
local fax machine to see who it's from. Look up your call divert or
call forwarding options for not-answered. When you see the machine call
you, hit "hangup" to force the call to your fax machine.

I had something similar happen to my cingular phone several months ago. I
don't know if it was a fax machine or what. I'd answer and there'd be
nobody there. All hours of the day and night. If I called back, there
would be no answer. I couldn't find the number in a phone directory search,
or even a general search of the web. I finally just put that number in my
(cell phone) phone book, labelled it "asswipe", and assigned a custom ring
tone of "none" to it. Problem solved. -Dave

Re: I'm Being Harrassed by a Fax Machine

These are great ideas -- I hadn't thought of them. But ... my phone (Samsung
x427) does not have individually customizable ringtones and it doesn't have
call forwarding on demand (I can have all calls forwarded, but not specific
    calls).

I called the police department, and am waiting to hear back from their phone
problems department. I'll see what they can do.

Re: I'm Being Harrassed by a Fax Machine

that might not be a fax machine..
when you get service you have 2 numbers, one is your voice number one is
    your data number..
now, when they pick the numbers they are suposed to make one up for the data
    number, usually 111-1111
if they gave you a real phone number, anyone calling it will make the phone
    say data call.
if its a newly recycled number, people might not know it was released by the
previous owner and still be calling it.

just call 611, have them remove your CSD number.

Re: I'm Being Harrassed by a Fax Machine

Your phone does have a group function, and the groups allow individual
ringtones. Add asswipe to the phone, and then assign it to the group
asswipe. You will then be able to assign it it's own gintone (none).

Re: I'm Being Harrassed by a Fax Machine

Forward your phone to a fax machine and see who the call is coming
from. Once you find out who the asswipes are, go down to Small Claims
Court and file a lawsuit for the max that you can sue for. They
probably won't show up and you will win by default. Then find out where
they have offices, homes and who their clients are and file attachments
    to their assets.

Is there a drawback to having my CSD number removed? Will I still be able to
access the Internet with my phone (not that I do it often)...?

    Thanks.

That's a great idea! Except... I just tried it and can't figure out how to
set the ringtone for the group to "none" -- I'm forced to choose a ringtone.
I guess I have to download a silent ringtone?

Don't get mad, get *EVEN* by finding as many request-a-fax sites on the web
as possible and putting that San Diego number in.

Revenge is a dish best served cold, and it's very *very* cold in cyberspace.

Just talked to Cingular. The rep, nor his supervisor, knew what a CSD number
is. They said there is no separate data phone number for me.
