My contract with Verizon expires next month and my wife insists that we
switch carriers. I like Nokia phones, so I'm considering 6600 with T-
    Mobile and 6230 with Cingular.

One scenario I've come up with (w/Let'sTalk):
    2 x Nokia 6230
Cingular GSM Nation Family Talk 1100 w/Rollover (1 yr contract)

Make $25 on phones and $79/mo. for service. Does this seem like a fair
    deal?

    Thanks,
    Woody

Your primary choice should be coverage, not phone.

Depends on the Verizon v.s. Cingular coverage where you live.

Sounds great, actually. Depending on when you make most of your calls, you
might want to consider the 7/7 option, if they still offer it. ($7 per
month per phone for 7PM nights/weekends)

BEFORE you sign up with Cingular, go to an actual Cingular store (not just a
Cingular dealer, a Cingular branded store) and ask to see the GSM map for
your specific home address. The maps aren't absolutely accurate for all
areas, but if your home is in a dead spot on the map, there is no point in
even considering Cingular. (the maps tend to exaggerate signal
availability, so if the map shows dead zone, you can bet it really is DEAD)
You might also want them to pull up the street addresses of your employers
or other places you expect to spend a lot of time. Note that the
information on the computers in the Cingular store is a lot more detailled
than any coverage map you will find posted online.

Then of course, take advantage of the trial period to thoroughly test your
phones EVERYWHERE you NEED them. Keep in mind that Cingular's trial period
is based on time (calendar days) OR time (minutes used). If you use all
your trial minutes on the first day, then you are locked into your contract.
Basically, watch your use carefully during the trial period, until you are
sure you want to keep the phones. -Dave

    Woody,

Evan is dead bang correct on this. The way you're going about this is
sorta like choosing a Cadillac over a Chevy because you want a smooth
ride and then going out "Baja'ing" with the Caddy when you'd only drive
the Chevy on new asphalt pavement.

Ask the folks in YOUR area which service provides the best coverage and
then choose from among their phones. They know it's critical to have a
good phone that will offer optimum service with their infrastructure or
    at least they SHOULD.

True, it should be, but don't jump to conclusions. There are areas
where Verizon Wireless, Cingular, and T-Mobile are the only three
options. This could especially be true in some "rural" areas where
Cingular/Verizon have cellular A and B and T-Mobile is the only PCS carrier.

I agree LetsTalk is kind of on the margin, but Amazon doesn't appear to
offer 1 yr contracts with Cingular. That's the only reason I chose them
    over Amazon...

Some of us would call Let's Talk as plainly unacceptable rather than "on
    the margin".

    Re: decent deal?

thats a really good deal with a 1 yr..

keep in mind that most places like this make you sign an extra contract, so
if you ever want to change your rate plan or cancel even in the 30 days you
might have to pay full price for the phones because they gave them to you
and ate the cost themselves and they will not take them back because they
    are "used"
