I had the V600, and had calls dropping and no signal , standing in
direct line of there tower, I live in Schenectady ny, call customer
service and they told me to the store that I got it from, did that
manager talked to district manager he said give me a V551 and resign 2
year contract. With MUCH reservation I did sign again but have 30
days, to go back to the other contract and I kept the v600.
Got the 1st V551 on this past Saturday, the 26th of Feb, Sunday lost 3
calls. Talked to the manager on Monday, said call Motorola support to
check on firmware and one of his two (local techs , who do nothing but
reburn the sim card and thats it ) Motorola after 20 mins on hold said
its either your carrier or the phone is bad swap for new phone. No
problem , Call manager, tell him what was said and done. Dead
silence on the phone, than he says a new is not going to change
things. I ask than why did you tell me on Saturday to come back and
exchange the phone with in the first 30 days, if I had problems, big
sigh on his end and he says bring it back and we will give you another.
Go in last evening and the first thing the rep says is its not them
and shows me a map of all there cell towers , and this is supposed to
build my confidence how? Than she proceeds to change everything over
and explains how GSM works and that overseas, GSM is MUCH better than
here, and that the competitor (Can you here me now) there technology is
more advanced than theres. Now I have the new one, and now I call
people and get a air sound in the back ground. I have read on the
internet that Motorola's quality in building cell phones has declined,
and its just rush to market, I dont believe it. Personally I think
its the Cingular and AT&T merger that is screwing things up and that
people just dont care about QUALITY service anymore. I am honestly
contemplating trying the competitor for 15 days and call all of my
contacts on there lines and from the places that I am having trouble
and dropped calls in and see what happens. You definetly can NOT have
perfect coverage all the time and every where you are, but you sure as
heck can try. Guess I am old fashioned in the repect that I am paying
for a service and I expect it to be done correctly.

What you're paying for at your bargain rate is service that's not perfect --
"correct" service would be way more than you probably are willing to pay.
Cheap, good, reliable -- pick two at most.

    Re: V551 and Cingulars GSM

I Have had similar problems in philadelphia. They started with the V400, it
became so bad that I switched to "Can you hear me now?" but it proved no
better. As it worked out Blue seemed to provide the best service, support
was terrible (worse than orange!) Had a V505 and it was great, alas I
switched back to Orange since to use both networks you needed the 64k SIM.
Unlocked the V505 and had no problems. Orange finally admitted the V400 was
junk and the swapped them for V551's for the price difference (not bad) well
the V551 is worse than the V400!! Had the swapped several times until I
finally got one that worked! I know others with similar problems.

My conclusion is that society has finally accepted bad products as "just the
way it is" The only way to stop this is to go back to land lines or smoke
signals, or just live with it!!!!!

Cheap and reliable. That would imply good since reliability means you can
count on it, which is pretty much the definition of good.

Here on the Pacific coast, I do pretty well. I have not seen the
"roam" signal since the merger. There was a dead spot in Olympia,
where I live. My new v551 works through the dead zone. It also works
in some buildings where my old Nokia did not.
Today I could not call out of the basement floor of the State
Capitol building, but no one can.

Reliable isn't necessarily good, since it doesn't include such things as
billing, customer service, rate plans, and coverage.
