Hey all,
When I was with AT&T I was able to suspend my cell phone for $9
amonth when I went oversea's to work for a few months and then be
able to turn on my phone when I came back to the US. Now I have
Cingular and I asked them if I was able to do this and they said no.
They want me to pay a bill for three months when I'm not going to be
using the phone ( switch sim cards when I'm oversea's )
Has anyone every heard of this or was the person I was talking to
talking out of there ass?
Thanks

IIRC, way back when... Talking back in the late 80's, Cellular One did
allow you to shut down your service totally but keep your cellular phone
number for a period of time (up to three months?). I believe the charge
was something like $5/mo.
That was then and this is now though. Times, rates, packages change.
If you tried one CSR and they told you that, walk into a store and see
what they say. Some of the folks are pretty sharp, most are drones.
Every so often you'll find somebody who's sharp as a tack, really knows
their stuff, AND tries to actually look out for his/her customer.

Per BklynKnight:

I just had one of my Verizon land lines disconnected. In the course of the
discussion it came up that I could have that number kept as "mine" indefinately
by paying $5.00 per month.
So if somebody were going away for long enough and no such option were available
with the cellular carrier maybe they could move the number to a land line and
thake advantage of the land line providor's plan.

Re: Suspend service for a time
I think they will let you do it if you are not on a contract. But if
you are under contract, you are expected to fulfill your obligations of
service which means you must keep it on until expiration. Maybe they
will give you a contract extension for 3 months.

Re: Suspend service for a time
Cingular will let you drop your plan down to 10.00 a month. Just tell them
that you want your phone set up for emergency use only.
