I'm in the same situation. As it now stands, I think they would
force us to pick one of their GSM plans. None of their current
plans would be suitable for me at my price point ($30). But
plans change all the time. We can decide when the time comes.

I had a colleague who was a satisfied Verizon wireline customer. I
wondered who the other one was.

Not a problem for me, as I use my phone primarily for local calling. I will
not pay them a cent, ever, for an "upgrade." I'll walk first. More people
should do that, and those oppressive fees would be withdrawn.

If that ever happens to me, I'll simply go elsewhere.

I have a real problem with companies that push their customers around. I
have only one (small) weapon that I can use on them: I will not favor them
with even ONE CENT of my hard-earned money. It gives me a sense of
satisfaction to know that I can thumb my nose at them.

    Screw Cingular.

Re: Is Cingular Likely To Phase Out TDMA?

This is very interesting, but refers to AT&T and Cingular cell sites.
Neither had any significant coverage in WNC and had to use Verizon's
network or perhaps a smaller provider.

Anyone can contact Cingular in this area and they will not sell an
AMPS/TDMS capable phone or replace one for an existing customer.

So, Cingular has in fact terminated TDMS/APMS service in this area.
They have zero coverage 80 miles north of their 40% owner BellSouth's
    HQ for hundreds of miles.

Regarding 3G the following quote applies to Cingular conversion to 3G
upgrade, but the Wall Street Journal and other sources clearly show
Verizon as the only provider with any wide 3G coverage implemented.
Changing the zip code for Cingular shopping I could not find a Cinular
gPC card with better than 135Kbs, so it looks like the graph is 2 years
off i.e. in 2005 they are offering their 2001-2003 data services.

    .............quote.............*............
As a result, GSM offered 3G deployment sooner and at a lower cost than
    CDMA.
    ........................end quote.......................

When I was with Sprint I had much better coverage than now with Cingluar...
You can try Verizon, they seem to have the best coverage.

Verizon sucks here, and Cingular is best!! T-Mobile by far beats
    Verizon here...this in Florida.

    Where do you live?
